Ok, I'd like to say first of all that Sharon Penman is NOT a fantasy writer.
I mention her, because she's written historical novels about Plantaganent England and Wales. Her books are well characterised, well paced, and the reader might learn something interesting, too. The books are more about the activities of nobles, which might help some DMs with roleplaying such characters, or even get some plot ideas to... ahem... "borrow".
I'll list the order of her books, in order of when they are set:
When Christ and His Saints Slept
Time and Chance
Here Be Dragons
Falls the Shadow
The Reckoning
The Sunne in Splendor
She's also written a couple of medieval murder-mysteries (The Queen's Man and one other I never picked up), which aren't as good as the main novels, but might provide DMs with plot inspiration.
Of all of them, Time and Chance is not worth bothering with.
