Larry Niven & Jerry Pournelle

Books

I really enjoyed the War World books, Mote in God's Eye, Lucifer's Hammer, and pretty much all Science Fiction written by the collaborative minds of Niven & Pournelle.

I like human-focused Science Fiction with a military undercurrent, somewhat gritty. What other authors out there write similar Sci-Fi...I don't like the highly intellectual, rambling Sci-Fi stories--I like a good fast paced action yarn, sci-fi mystery (Mote In God's Eye had a lot of mystery tension building up).

What other authors out there write like this? The only recent Sci-Fi books I really enjoyed were the Dune pre-quels written by Herbert's son, which fit the above mold pretty well.

Any recommendations would be appreciated....thanks in advance.

Liberty's Edge

I recommend to you "The Legacy of Heorot" also by Niven. I'm also reading "There Will Be Dragons" by John Ringo, really military/end of the world/fantasy sci fi. It's a little weak in areas, but the story is pretty compelling.

I have not thought about "The Mote in God's Eye" for many years.I read it about 18 or 19 years ago.
(pause now to contemplate my age...sigh)

It's fun to look back now and imagine a world dominated by a triumphant Soviet Union. Today this is more of a stretch than flying into a star, depending on your Langston Field to protect you.

Thanks for bringing up a fond memory. I will have to find that book again and see how it reads now.

"War of the Worlds" is another favorite. I re-read it every year or two.

Hey! What happened to my post?

I just wanted to thank you for bringing back fond memories of reading The Mote in God's Eye.

What seems more fantastic now, flying into a star with only a Langston Field to protect you, or that the Soviet Union won the Cold War?

Dude, I think you started writing in front of the quote. I only know because I've done it too.

The Mote in God's Eye's sequel, The Gripping Hand, is also quite good.

I remember Niven's Ringworld to be well done, but have not read any of the sequels. I hear rumours that the latest one is fantastic, and the earlier sequels are not so hot.
