Airships

Dragon Magazine General Discussion

I know that one of the Forgotten Realms supplements covered airships very briefly, but it really didn't go into detail on how to construct one. And are there any other worlds that use airships, and if so, how are they designed?

There's a generic d20 supplement out there on Airships. I haven't read it, so I don't know if it's any good. Bastion Press published it and I think Paizo sells it on their site. It's just called "Airships."

Could you review it if you get it? I've been thinking about getting it.

Good supplement. Discusses building the ships (hull types and materials, different engine types--from wood burning to necrotic and elemental). Also combat, equipment, nautical crew types, terms, etc.. This is one of the best d20 books I have come across, very specific to its' title.

Sorry about briefness--I generally do not review products.

I have it, pretty good, so far as it goes. I imagine if you were running a terry brooks-type Ilse Witch/Jerle Shannara type adventure it would be a great boon. Would also enhance an Eberron adventure that focused on flying ships.
For roleplayers, there's good stuff on filling various roles of crew aboard such a ship; for dms there are tips for building your own airship, different types of magic for powering them, as well as mechanics for air combat.

Thanks for the info, guys...I'll probably get the airships supplement now that I know at least two people like it. Sorry if I hijacked this thread, but at least I stayed on topic this time.

Magic of Eberron covers the "hows" regarding elementally bound Airships.

I'm partial to the BP Airships book as well (written by Sam Witt), especially the necrotic ship that is fueled by burning corpses. Bastion also does a good job of posting updates and errata on their website, so the few oddities you might encounter have been cleaned up.

and if you can find any spelljammer sets, you could modify the rules and or ship sats from those

With a little creative tweaking, Airships can be used to create new SpellJammer ships or modify existing ones. I'm an old fan of the SJ setting and I found the book to be just what I needed as a base for updating the setting to 3E rules

If you could include a link to it, I'd really like it.

You can just do a search on Paizo's site and type in airships--products pop up first and you'll find it there.

But here is the link too...I finally figured out how to do actual links in Paizo posts....

rpgnow.com has a PDF for the Thrilling Tales pulp d20 RPG called "Zeppelin Adventures".

The senarios therein are adaptable to D&D (with some work). More important are the deck plans for classic airships such as the Hindenburg and the USS Macon (called the USS Hoboken in the PDF).

These plans were really what I was after, though the adventures were interesting. I would recommend it to anyone interested in airships for their campaign.

Dark Archive

The Explorer's handbook and Magic of Eberron cover airships and elemental binding. and there was an article on the official site abou airships. and Stormwrack covers ships of all kinds, and the material therein is highly applicable to Airships, such as rules for navigation and piloting, and ship-to ship combat.
