Holy cow! I just saw this BBC presentation on dvd over the weekend and it sparked a dozen ideas for different adventures/encounters/proposals! Another thread in this forum is talking about the Gaiman/McKean Mirrormask movie. Well, if that looks interesting, get this dvd and watch it. Or get the novel and read it, or get the comic adaptation and drool over that. The layers of character and originality of storyline are amazing! I mean, Charles DeLint does something similar set in the Pacific Northwest, but I haven't seen a miniseries of his stuff and this captures the spirit of those type of 'modern fantasy' stories perfectly. The names of the abandoned underground (read: subway) stops under London are really different (Earls Court is actually a court, Shepherds Bush has shepherds, Down Street goes perpetually down) and Mr Gaiman gives each one a distinct meaning as well as coming up with an overall good versus evil story to wrap up the characters. Watch this before you see Mirrormask. And help the homeless. And watch out for Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemaar.

And watch out for Mr. Croup and Mr. Vandemaar.
They'll have your head off before you can say Jack Ketch!
I absolutely love Neverwhere. I first picked it up as a book on tape (read by Gary Bakewell, the man who playes Richard Mayhew) for a car ride to Albuquerque and was immediatley addicted. I soon bought the book and loved it, then I got the DVDs. Now, I'm picking up the comic book version (with art by Glenn Fabry!!).
It is amazing (and I'm in love with Laura Frasier who plays Door) and it would probably top my list of "Must See!" movie recommendations for gamers... the plot elements are just so seamless. I think that American Gods was profoundly excellent, and I'm reeeeeeeally looking forward to his latest book, Anasi Boys, but Neverwhere will always hold a special place in my heart.
I want to be the Marquis De Carabas when I grow up!
