So what effect does the GSL have on all of the WotC/TSR pdfs, especially the pre-3rd edition stuff? Are the downloads of the aforementioned Spelljammer, et al, to go *poof* on October 1? Or will it take them releasing a 4e version of each game line to do it?

Are they simply trying to break with the OGL or is it with all of the game's past?

The GSL is irrelvant. The GSL is a license for other companies to use WotC's property (namely the logo and 4e rules). WotC doesn't need to license to themselves, so they can do whatever the heck they want to do with their older edition PDFs.

I understand it in no way binds them; but does it: a) indicate what they will do with their own backstock? and b) mean they will force other sellers (such as Paizo) to quit selling those pdfs?

Ah, but the REAL game there was Freebase! Good times, man, good times.

But he at the minimum NEVER refers to his character as "I".

jwrede is unsure why this is a problem unless your buddy is playing more than one character at a time. But it could be because jwrede has never been a big fan of speaking in third person about himself or his characters.

Of course, jwrede does make it a point to use different voices when speaking as character than when speaking as player.

Actually, at some Euro-Con about six months ago they were asked about 5th edition, and the answer was "Of course there will be a 5th!".

Those seven words are so sweet to me. Of course when I hear them I'm not thinking of editions, I'm setting my glass out, waiting for the pour.

They have also made several comments to the effect that they want to get a "five-year run" out of a single edition (its been five betwen 3.5 and the 4e announcment).

It's nice to see someone getting mileage out of the five-year plan since the Soviet Union went away.

Stupid rabid collector genes! I guess the almost complete collection stops here. :/

Does that make you like Hef? Oh, he collects stupid rabbits (aka Bunnies) - my bad!

Many of us have that weakness in one form or another. Mine manifests in music. Part of why I haven't bought more RPGs over the years is that my money went to tracking down obscure albums. Take The Police, for instance. Their albums are fairly easy to find. Sting's work is ubiquitous. But Andy Summer's jazz albums? Stewart Copeland's soundtracks? It's why I never got into CCGs.

I do eat Subway, but since they advertise as being healthy, I don't really count them as fast food.

The key word here is "advertise" - it's quite possible to get more gut busting food there than several other chains, if you're not careful. Even more unrelated, I don't understand how they don't have swiss, cheddar, or even mozzarella cheese as options.*

-Aah, how about Cheddar?
-Well, we don't get much call for it around here, sir.
-Not much ca--It's the single most popular cheese in the world!
-No 'round here, sir.

*at least at the only Subway within a 4 hour train ride of my location.

Rise and shine campers! ... It's GROUNDHOG DAY!

You know, that's an animal that never got enough love in *any* edition. Certainly *some* gnome illusionist had one as a familiar or what-not.

For what it's worth:

I don't believe 1985 was all about patriotism and icons. The other side to the whole New Coke, Classic Coke and Pepsi story is the nature of taste tests. Pepsi had been running the Pepsi Challenge taste tests at public venues all over the world just before New Coke was introduced. But taste tests revealed something interesting: the sweeter the soda, the better it did in blind taste tests - when using the one or two ounce samples. When consumers were given a choice of twelve ounce samples - drinking the whole drink - the reverse happened: the sweeter the drink, the less it appealed to people. Thus, Classic Coke generally outsells Pepsi when actually purchased in cans and bottles.

One thing is fairly certain, none of us (outside of playtesters) has had a chance to really enjoy a full twelve ounces of 4E yet (aka a campaign). *That's* when we'll know if it's any good or not.
