The question I have may seem simple, but it derailed a game session for almost an hour while the group debated it. The rules in the Core Rulebook for caster level needed to create a magic weapon seems very clear (3 X the biggest enhancement bonus or special ability bonus), thus a +3 longsword would require a minimum caster level of 9 to create the weapon. The issue came up about adding multiple special abilities to a sword.
For example, let's say a 5th level character (minimum level needed for magic weapon creation feat) wants to create a magic longsword, that is +1 enhancement bonus, and has the abilities of Bane, Frost, Flaming, Shock, and Thundering on it. Each of those abilities is just +1. Would the 5th level character be able to craft this weapon? The rules state that the minimal caster level needed to create a magic weapon is again just 3X the enhancement bonus, or biggest ability bonus, whichever is larger. So, seeing that all of the ability bonuses are just +1, the 5th level character could make this weapon (assuming the character has the gold necessary, can made the spellcraft check, and has all the available spells).
This seems like a very over-powered weapon for a 5th level character to create. Is there some Errata or FAQ that addresses this? I would love any thoughts on this.
