Background:
Zorel Veranthos grew up as the only child of Tanerro and Xania, a male wizard of transmutation and a female cleric of Desna. His father, Tanerro, had moved the family to Magnimar to pursue his study of Thassilonian magic and runes. They lived a modest life supplied by his father’s magical wares shop. In truth, his mother ran the shop and his father spent his time with Thassilonian studies or identifying/creating magical items for the shop. His childhood was a happy one. His mother would tell him stories of Desna and the gods and his father would let him sit in the lab. In truth Zorel enjoyed his mother’s stories of the Drunken Hero more than those of the Goddess of Luck. Similarly, Zorel was always more eager to watch his father create magical items rather than performing Thassilonian research. As he grew older Zorel began to do more than watch his father work in the lab, he began to help. He began with helping his father in Thassilonian studies at first, but by the time he was 14 his father began to teach him magic. Although he loved the time he spent learning to harness the arcane energies there was always something missing. It wasn’t until his 17th summer that Zorel discovered what was missing in his life. He had accompanied his father to Riddleport, for business. They were to deliver an item his father had been studying for a client. They went to return the item and deliver their findings to the client on his ship, which was anchored in one of the docks in Riddleport. Zorel, amazed at the sites of Riddleport decided to explore the city while his father met with the client. With his father’s permission, Zorel began to explore the Cyphergate City. It was during his explorations near the docks that he came upon a tournament of combat. The local thugs and sailors participated in the test of martial prowess that was run by Illed. A Chelaxian who operated the fight club out of his bar. Being located by the docks he had little to worry about from the law, even less so because it was Riddleport. It was here that Zorel learned of his desire to master the art combat. Seeing the men move and dance as they avoided harm awoke something in him. By the time he and his father returned to Magnimar Zorel had convinced his father to allow him to attend one of the combat academies so long as his arcane studied did not suffer. Zorel took to weapon training like a fish to water. Although it took him a bit longer to study combat than it took him to study the arcane arts, the boy was still better than most. After learning the proper use of all the basic weapons he wanted to take up the rapier, a favorite of the Drunken Hero, but felt more comfortable with the flail. Zorel’s days were spent helping his father in the mornings, afternoons at the combat academy and evening studying his arcane arts. Occasionally he would accompany his father on business trips in Magnimar and out, to other cities or towns. He would always look forward to the trips to Riddleport as he would eagerly attend the fight club, usually as a spectator and occasionally as a competitor. It was during one of those trips, while camped by the side of the road that his father provided the final key for Zorel. While the young man was practicing with his flail, honing his combat skills, Tanerro made an innocent comment that Zorel would be better protected if he had a magical shield in place while in combat. That simple comment was like a lightning strike. Why not cast spells while wielding his weapon? Zorel spent the next two years learning to do exactly that. He honed his magical skills and his combat skills, perfecting them each to work in concert with each other. At the age of 20 Zorel decided it was time to make his way in the world. He found himself in Riddleport for a time, making name for himself in Illed’s combat games. He began to win more often than not, but in truth even in his losses Zorel thought himself a winner. For him, each loss provided the opportunity for him to learn more about himself and what weaknesses he needed to improve on. It was one night, after winning a fight, that Zorel came to know Professor Lorrimor. As he was walking along the docks he noticed the professor walking alone, presumably to his ship, focused more on the book he was reading, than on where he was going. The man had almost walked into Zorel. Looking back, out of curiosity more than anything, he noticed two men begin to follow the professor. Zorel had seen these men. Seeing them follow the professor he knew immediately that he was their next target. Zorel quickly turned around and followed them. When the professor mistakenly walked down an empty dock Zorel knew things were about to get bad. The professor looked up from his book to discover he had walked down the wrong dock and as he turned around to go back the two men sprang on him. One held a knife to his throat while the other demanded his valuable. Zorel was there in an instant, knocking one of them unconscious in a single blow to the head while the other, who had the knife on the professor, move to place the professor between himself and Zorel. Threatening to kill the professor if Zorel made any move he demanded that Zorel throw down his weapon. Not wanting the professor to get hurt, Zorel did so. Seizing the opportunity to attack an unarmed man the thug threw the professor to the floor and charged at Zorel. Zorel quickly summoned the magic within and around him and loosed bolts of pure arcane force at his charging attacker, killing the man. The professor was at first speechless at what had happened. Realizing Zorel had saved his life he was profusely grateful. The professor asked if Zorel would be kind enough to accompany him to his ship. The quick walk led to Zorel accompanying the professor for a short time while in Varisia and a fast friendship was formed. When the professor decided to go back to Ustalav he asked Zorel to accompany him but the young man declined, stating his path did not lay in that direction. The professor told the young magus that he would be forever grateful for the day the young man happened to chance by and save his life, even stating he would be named in the professor’s will. Zorel was quick to tell the professor that such a thing was not necessary and the two settled the disagreement by agreeing that Desna had been smiling on them both that night. Saying their goodbyes Zorel left for Sand Point, where he had heard that there was a problem with local goblins that had been attacking caravans with fireworks. |
