Background - The Beast Inside:
Her father went missing before she was born. He gave her mother an Heirloom Silver Ring. "It is as precious to me as you. A seal of a deal." he told Zoe's Mother. Walking across the Autumnal Bodmin Moor Zoe & her mother were attacked by a beast. Retribution for her fathers broken promise or a hereditary curse Zoe's inherited? Her mother brutally killed in front of her eyes; a voice in her head told her to take the Ring off her mothers dead hand. Putting it on Zoe turned into a lion and drove the shadowy beast off. The voice laughed. Zoe is originally from Cornwall, England. A place famous for being one possible home of Camelot, pagans, the best surfing in the UK, tin mining & 'hollow hills' home of the fey Zoë remembers her mother's funeral. The wind swept hill where the small church was located, which buried their family for generations. A few relatives, none of them really close and all keeping their distance from the young woman crying openly beside the closed casket. Rowena was due in the next day from New York, she had an important meeting so could not make her sisters' funeral. But when she arrived Zoë would return with her, to a new life. It had a couple of months since the attack and Zoë was still confused about the change that occured. Zoë told the cops what had happened as she had been taught, although they did not openly laugh at her she could see and hear their laughter when they thought she had left. Zoë was refered to a councillor whom believed her story was a psychological way of coping with the trauma she had suffered. A small article had been written in the local paper about Zoë's explanation, which quickly became the ridicle of the school. Though used to being teased, even her few friends started to distance themselves from her. Her only freedom was that every night she would put on the ring and become something and somebody else and run free from the worries loneliness of life, experiencing the primal existence. She had lost weight, that everyone else put down to her lack of appetite. Though she wss secretly eating all the time. She knelt on the hard wooden pews and cried hoping that when she moved she could change and not be so alone. The tattoo is ancient Libyan, but sees the symbol for 'trick' instead of that for 'perspective'.
Rising Conflict - Like a Fish out of Water:
She has come from the English countryside, to be orphaned in NY, staying at her Aunt's place, going to Art College. She does not fit in with Aunts' WASP lawyer colleagues. She breaks curfew, stays out, trying to find a place in the world. Zoe currently lives with her Aunt, goes to Art College during the day & clubbing at night First Story - Pride before a fall:
Abridged - Whilst in a Detroit wine bar with her Aunt Rowena and future shrink Prof. Whittaker; Zoë's attention was caught by a mob boss discussing with an 'associate' a raid on a research lab. After Whittaker interrupts a crucial exchange, Zoë has to stop the theft with little information. Hiding in the shadows and awaiting the rogues, she is unprepared for a host of ghoul thieves... But, she is rescued by a sorceror, Blair Renault - together they track the ghouls back to their lair and get back the information.[/i] After moving to Detroit Zoë feels even more lost in the world but she tries to create a purpose for herself. She wants to help those in trouble and try and prevent the unprepared being abused. Sure that she can protect those that need it; Zoë takes to the streets on an evening. Trying to act as a vigilante, she goes to bars and get a feel for the major players in town. Unfortunately she is really out of her depth in gathering the intelligence, most of the time she ends up being chased out of bars. With her ability to sense the 'weak' in a herd she follows the natural victims from bars and clubs - shadowing them and protecting those that are the most vulnerable. This proves especially useful when she finds crack-houses or vampire bars where they prey on the weak. She develops a small reputation as a shadowy avenger. Whilst at a wine bar with her Aunt Rowena and her 'associates' she is introduced to Prof S. Whittaker, a psychiatrist. Zoë is aghast that her Aunt thinks she needs to see a 'shrink'. Certainly her nights sleep have been disturbed since the cnfrontation with the demon *****, making her reminice about the loneliness following her orphaning. Whilst making polite conversation with the professor (and conceeding to be his patient) she over hears that a General Motors is developing 'Hydrogen-Fuel Cell' Technology and that the research labs at the University is going to be robbed by the mob. Is this simply Industrial espionage or something more sinister? But when the shadowy figure ask something important of the mafiosa boss, Prof Whittaker interrupts, cursing inwardly at the lack of intel Zoë turns all her attention to the gentleman. Thus one evening, after leaving her threapist she heads over to the labs. She waits from the roof-top as she sees a group of 'men' enter, upon confronting them it appears they are ghouls. Transforming into a lion she tries to stop them - but is on the wrong end of the fight until a sorceror Blair Renault helps her and together they track them to their lair to retrieve the formula. Guest Star - 'On the prowl:
Abridged Version - Whilst trying to finish the investigation carried out by her late best friend. Zoe heads down onto the underground looking for the reason why homeless people are disappearing. Getting off the subway; a train crashes and a young man runs. She follows him down into the deserted tunnels, usinng his electrical powers he stops her leonine form. But she hunts him further into the tunnels - whereupon they find a cult worshipping a large monster. Can they join forces to stop the cult and the monster or will they perish. Like the native New Yorkers, Zoë prefers to take the subway rather than trying to navigate the busy city streets. It also enabled her to observe a cross-section of humanity, 'It always surprises me the amount of strangeness that isn't connected to the supernatural.' she thought astonished as she watched a clown juggling bibles on the platform.
When Zoë arrived in NY, Sally was her first and best friend. A clued in young woman Sally studied diligently, investigating anthropology and aboriginal history. She served as a great insiration to a slacker like Zoë. Sally had found out that vagrants and rats had recently disappeared from the parts of the old subway system. Specifically a hobo had found a statue amongst some old debris. He had been hoarding it but had suddenly been found murdered, with strange markings according to 'rumours'. After a party Sally was run off the road by a trio of identical men.... Snapping back into the present, Zoë shocked a couple of people in the car as she suddenly stood up. She was going to visit 'Toothy' Hulson near the abandoned station where the disappearances happened. The track after this section had been closed to the public after a landslide and collapse of a tunnel in the 1940's. The section of Subway built in 1870's using Irish (navvi) blood, was designed by an eccentric Jedediah Hulse using hidden cache of gold. It describes a strange elliptical patterns rather than direct routes, which he claimed to the council were to avoid bad spots. After his disappearance at the turn of the century this line was never expanded. Recently strange sounds have been heard, singing? Machinery? But no-one should be down there; of course the poor, lost, destitute, insane, wanted or unwanted use these tunnels but now even they are starting to leave! Getting off the train and waiting upon the platform for Toothy, Zoë watched a young man lost in his thoughts (Eddie). More stuff here - including Toothy giving her the statue? With a screech of metal, a carriage flew into the station - too fast and derailed. Smoke, fire and sparks racked the station, the emergency lights covering the scene in a blue luminescence. Zoë stumbled over to the young man, coughing the smoke out of her lungs and wiping the blood from the scalp wound. She sees into his eyes, a crackling lightning filling them. 'Did he do this?', she thinks a small growl forces it's way out of her mouth. He flees but she catches up to him, she changes into a lion!
Zoë & Eddie meet-up and find the ghoul enclave in the tunnels. Guest Star Redux - Sasha Mau's (?)
Whilst on a stake-out, Zoë sees a robbery go down. Unable to aprehend the thieves during the crime she follows them to the hide-out. Once there the commissioner of the burglary, double-crosses Sasha just as Zoë smashes through a window. The distraction allows Sasha to escape with her goods. Zoë avoids being 'offed' and runs. Later she tracks down Sasha but the confrontation doesn't go to Zoë's plan... Equipment:
Unbreakable Silver Engagement Ring - on a steel chain around Zoës' neck. Handbag, containing the usual cosmetics, keys, money, a thin summer dress. Generally Zoë travels light. her style tends towards 'gothy', but she will dress-up when her aunt persuades her. Appearance:
Zoë is currently wearing a black dress, shawl and dark eye make-up. She has various peircing and a tattoo on her right shoulder-blade of some demonic sigil in a circle. At about 5'4", her lycanthropy (curse) has meant that her 'puppy fat' has been changed into muscle. She appears quite toned without being lean. Adventure so far:

Arriving home from Art College, Zoë notices the customary ‘at a meeting tonight’ note from her Aunt. Without even reading it she grabs a change of clothes and leaves for the club. Walking inside she relaxes, the beat filling her body she moves to the rhythm on the dance floor. Zoë moves to the bar, sweat pouring off her. A rugged man starts chatting her up, unused to all the attention she follows him to a darkened corner. The man, a vampire that had noticed the darkness that radiated off her as she danced. Thirsting for her powerful blood, the vampire pounced. With a scream Zoë tried to fight him off & run, but the throngs made that impossible. Listening to the beast inside she turned around; pulling the silver ring off the chain around her neck and onto her finger. She changed. A lioness prowled where she once stood, then leapt. The vampire & lion fought tooth and claw amongst the club patron until the fight spilt onto the street. The fight ended abruptly in an alley. Then Zoe changed back to human, feeling glad that she left a bag with a T-shirt behind a dumpster, just in case. Zoë takes insults harshly, she is looking for a group of friends (a pride) that she will stand by. This also means that she would follow the other PC’s (once bonded) without just being curious all the time. There is also the ‘Fall’ part of the aspect, which could be invoked to do with the Beast (Demon) that influences her. How that influence has to be battled. Also could be invoked to make her do reckless things not in line with her best interests. Obsolete Guest Star - Trust your Animal Instincts:
Having been dragged by her Aunt Rowena to a soirée, Zoë was feeling isolated. The lawyers and elite held no grandeur for her, despite her Aunts wishes Zoe could not see herself growing up to be a part of this hollow world. Fortunately, she managed to get an invite for her friend Sally, a well-born surveyor who happened to share the same taste in music and art as herself. With a couple of vapid flibbertigibbets flitting around them, this gathering held by the Comte de Montfort to celebrate a new amalgamation was turning out surprisingly well. Sally started talking about the recent disappearances of vagrants & the rats from the old redundant subway system. 'How are the Council going to respond?' Sally questioned (knowing to the mundanes that this meant the city, whereas to clued in people like herself & Zoë it was the White). Out the corner of her eye Zoë spotted a well-dressed slick gentleman listening in, the eyes met just long enough before she lowered them; Zoë fearful of what might be there did not want anyone looking into her soul. He moved towards the pair introducing himself with eyes slightly downcast, as if ashamed (?) as Parker de Montfort, son of the host; whilst still assessing their reactions to his name. Zoë never one to care for titles (for once she had ridden with the Duchess of Bedford on a hunt) was non-plussed. He bid Sally to continue with her tale, the rest left either skeptical about the tale or not wanting to be seen with the odd trio. The rest of the night went swimmingly; art, history, music, sub-cultures were all discussed, sometimes to frantic debate. Parker though got a concession that Sally inform him about anything else she learns about the tunnels or the supernatural in general. It was a fortnight before Zoë saw Sally again, a busy 2 weeks filled with coursework and guitar practice. But they finally met at an apartment warming downtown, Sally seemed nervous but excited. There was a development in her survey; it seems a hobo had found a statue amongst some old debris. He had been hoarding it but had suddenly been found murdered, with strange markings according to 'rumours'. It worried Zoë to see her best friend so excited but happy she found an interest (maybe in more than just this survey, she romantically mused). Sallys' face went pale and tracing her sight-line Zoë saw three men suited and near identical enter the party, clearly out of place. Sally bolted, Zoë caught her trying to stop her or at least accompany her. But Sally told her she had called the dishy Parker and he was to meet her in the hills. Not wishing to be third wheel at their tryst, she let Sally leave. The next day she heard that Sally had died, Zoë has not forgiven herself for letting her go alone. She should have trusted her instincts. Still broken up about the loss of her friend, Zoë needs to do something. Threat - Abandoned Subway
The New York subway abandoned in the 1940's after a tunnel collapsed excavating a new section. The city council believed it was because it was too near the river, but was it something more sinister? The Nazi's, a group of ghouls, or wizards caving-it in to stop something from seeing the light? The Subway built in 1870's using Irish (navvi) blood, was designed by an eccentric Jedediah Hulse using hidden cache of gold. Richard 'Toothy' Hulson - A vagrant that lives in the tunnels, known for his one & only tooth. He seems to know all the routes through the tunnels and seems to be the first to hear the rumours. He is often heard muttering to himself as he drags along and old shovel behind him. He has heard to say he will never leave the tunnels and there will be a reckoning soon. A belligerent ageless man, Toothy will talk to just about anyone in exchange for a drink. Obsolete Guest Star Redux - The Cats got claws:
After the death of her best friend Sally, Zoë felt the need to unwind and destress. So she went to central park, putting on the silver ring despite her better judgment. Once on all doubts crept away, was she falling further into the maws of the beast? Soon she cared not, running through the park hunting squirrels thought disappeared. A stranger sight was not seen there that night. Aeons passed, she found herself running with asphalt beneath her paws, lost away from the cloth cache thought returned. Then she heard the movements of a man with another shadow following him. They moved like silk mesmerised Zoë joined in the chase, though alley and street she could hardly keep pace until they entered the train depot. The chased man a rough looking youth seemed to be cornered and exhausted, the other figure emerged from the shadows a visceral mess. The feral visage destroyed what could have been a human face, fangs and clawed hands dripped in blood turned black ink by the night. A brief flash of movement and a tussle ensued with the feral strength affording the attacker the upper hand. Whilst this occurred Zoë decided she must help this man against the beast, perhaps seeing his plight as hers. She positioned herself on a box car and pounced raking the feral vampire the blood spurting in her eyes. The vampire seriously wounded takes advantage of the distraction hamstrings Zoë and takes flight. With a howl of pain, frustration and despair Zoë-lion jumps into the boxcar. Shocked by the vampire, lion and desperate fight the thug recovers his composure remarkably quickly. Just in time to see a cute blond head pop around the corner of the boxcar. "Ummm, love you wouldn't mind lending me that nice leather jacket your wearing? Its just its a bit nippy and i left my other suit elsewhere." she says with a wink. The jacket comes flying at her head, "I'm Jimmy G by the way, you are?" he says sardonically. As they head over to the park to pick up her clothes, they decide that the vampire needs to be dealt with. They are both sick of being forced to live in fear. "We need to attack its' lair, in daylight, the two of us might survive. But I've got a friend."
