I would say I most frequently get called upon to make friends with local suppliers of exotic goods(Diplomacy). Knowing the local customs can be quite helpful in knowing where to go. (Know: Local)
Occasionally a delicate touch must be had in acquiring certain goods (Sleight of Hand) or perhaps knowing something's true value (Appraise) or even the codes that certain healer's use to disguise some of their more poisonous wares. (Craft Alchemy)
