Appearance:
Zalanna is tall and deeply beautiful, and though she doesn't do anything to call attention to herself or flaunt her beauty, it's a stunningly obvious fact. Even if you study her closely, you can find no blemishes or physical imperfections. It's like artwork--the kind of beauty that doesn't knock you over with lust, but which gets into your head, and you can't help comparing others to that ideal. She carries herself unconsciously like a noble, not in an overly snobbish way or anything... she is just supremely confident, and doesn't question whether other people will listen to her or take her seriously. It's assumed. Her speech is grammatically correct, pleasant, and precise. She strikes people as very knowledgeable and well-traveled, although she looks relatively young to actually be as experienced as she seems.
Background:
Like all Shabti, Zalanna was created to suffer for the sins of another, and she suffered in this manner for a time, unmeasured by her since it consumed all of her existence and she could see no way out. Her suffering changed though when Zalanna was rescued from her fate during a raid by Besmara on Hell. She was pressed into her service along with several other Shabti (presumably because Besmara found use for immortal servants). Even though she became a slave at that point, she found it much more freedom than she had ever had up to that point, and in her slavery she found purpose, and an identity apart from her mortal "twin" ... so, in truth, slavery was her freedom. She learned to be a good pirate, and found that she enjoyed it. Compared to hell it was joyous, but of course she had the false memories of her mortal "twin" and knew that there was more. Still, she was content if this was to be her fate rather than that. She (as a separate individual, rather than a copy of the original snobbish noble) was basically raised on Besmara's Seawraith, with Besmara as distant mother and pirates as siblings... and the fires of hell perhaps as a distant and hated father. A very unusual coming of age, but then again, as she was ageless, how could it be normal? She soon earned a measure of freedom on the ship as she became competent and then good at what she did (she had all the time in the world to practice, after all), and over time, she was even trusted. It may have been imagination, but Zalanna even felt from time to time that Besmara looked upon her with favor, or possibly even affection. Later (who knows how long--time blurs to an immortal), Zalanna found herself face to face with Besmara as she attempted to reboard the Seawraith after a stop at Sigil. Besmara tossed her a longbow, along with her few meagre possessions, telling her that the longbow used to belong to her mortal twin, and that her services were no longer required. Zalanna at first felt rejected and abandoned, since she had come to think of Besmara as a strange kind of foster mother for an unwanted copy. However, she has pondered that moment for a long time since then, and although she still can't know whether Besmara was being kind or callous, she tends to favor the idea that Besmara wanted her to be free, and to find her own way. Perhaps, as a God, she knew she had a destiny. Of course, perhaps she had simply grown bored with her servant and wanted a new one. Her present circumstances aren't altered by the answer to the question, but she does wonder sometimes. Suddenly free from her servitude, she once again had to restart her life, beginning a search to rediscover herself and find her purpose and identity in this new context. She tried many things, but turned to investigations because she seemed to have talent in that area, trying to find the truth behind the lies. She hunts down conspiracies, she rights wrongs, but in other cases lets infractions go if she thinks that injustice is the better choice. She found that her memories of how to use the "family" bow gave her quite a bit of skill in that area. Zalanna still pays devotion to Besmara for providing a different choice than the fate she was created for, and for being likely the best mother a Shabti could find. She is also motivated by trying *not* to be like her mortal twin, whom she loathes for participating in the creation and damning of the Shabti as a people. She doesn't believe it is possible, but if she ever has the chance the wizards and nobles who participate in the barbarous practice of creating life only to force it to suffer, she would glory in that possibility, although it is a hard problem since the creation of her entire race is based on this practice, and so what is their future if they aren't created in the first place? Zalanna doesn't know, but she would still kill every participant in creating a Shabti, given the chance. Worse than slavery, worse than murder... creating a life just to condemn it to eternal torture. Because of her time in Hell, as well as the memories of her mortal twin, Zalanna has learned to be quite devious in her negotiations, but her own soul, apart from all that she has been through, longs to be good, and she does her best, although she spurns any sort of external guideline about how that is to be accomplished. No one understands what she has been through, and she hopes to save others from that fate, if possible, by guidance or by subtle manipulation... she doesn't care, as long as it keeps people out of that kind of danger. And of course, if she ever runs into other Shabti, she would feel obligated to stand up for them as well. She is stunningly beautiful and perfect in physical form, as noted, but often dismisses her own beauty and usually dislikes people focusing on it because it is what she shares with her mortal twin (probably long dead, but?), and not what is important and individual to herself.
