About Xantrian Carver

Background:
Xantrian Carver, 37, served as weaponsmith for the Korvosan Guard for several years, until his wife Myria was murdered by one of Gaedren Lamm's underlings. The guard was unable to track down the murderer, and, to Xantrian, at least, did not seem all that interested in even trying. Overwhelmed by grief and rage, he quit his service to the guard and investigated the murder himself. A year of fruitless searching eventually found him at a small temple of Calistria. He vowed his service to The Unquenchable Fire if she would help him enact vengeance on his beloved Myria's murderer.

Fueled by Calistria's power, Xantrian returned to his investigations, and found that he could intimidate hardened criminals with a mere glance, that he could discern their lies with ease, and in short order he found the murderer, a small-time thief named Velk. Though Velk pled for his life, Xantrian cut him down without mercy.

After, Xantrian found that his fury turned to grief. Though Myria was avenged, it did nothing to fill the hole in his heart. He has all but abandoned his weaponsmithing, turning instead to cooking. Myria had been a fantastic chef, and it makes Xantrian feel closer to her. He runs a small restaurant in Midland District called The Gilded Prawn, though he does not own it, and is paid a livable wage that allows him to get by without worry. He has also developed something of a reputation as somebody who will enact vengeance on those who commit wrongs but slip through the legal cracks. Xantrian refuses pay for this service, as long as he judges the cause just.

Xantrian's primary use of his weaponsmithing experience has been to craft the knives he uses to cook, and the glaive (not all that dissimilar to a large knife on a pole) he wields when danger threatens.

Though he knows that Gaedren Lamm is probably responsible for Myria's death, if somewhat indirectly, Xantrian has failed to track the criminal down. He keeps an eye and ear out for information about Lamm, and has heard plenty of stories that make his blood boil. He hopes to eventually track Lamm down introduce the man to the consequences of his actions.

Description:
Xantrian is relatively thin, but considerably stronger than he looks. He has bright reddish-orange hair that is starting to grey at the temples, and wears an almost permanent scowl on his face. He dresses simply most of the time - pants, simple shirt, and an apron (he has several, simple white cloth for cooking; thick, durable leather for smithing).

Somewhat counter-intuitively to his background as a weaponsmith, Xantrian is near-obsessive about his desire to stay clean. He shaves at least twice a day, bathes daily, and always keeps some soap around to wash up. His hair is kept short and neatly groomed.

Faith:
Xantrian's faith in Calistria is something of an odd thing, as he has little to no interest in the lust and trickery aspects of his goddess. However, Calistria answered his call for assistance in enacting vegeance, and though he does not love her, he respects her.

Morals:
Above all else, Xantrian cannot abide seeing violence against those unable to defend themselves - it reminds him too much of his dear Myria. He will not stand aside or down to prevent such horrors. And after seeing the arm of justice unable or unwilling to bring Myria's murderer to justice, he has no faith in the legal options. The Korvosan Guard is, in his opinion, ineffectual and possibly corrupt.

Myria loved the city of Korvosa. She loved the smell of the ocean, the sound of the waves, the grand displays of wealth. Xantrian loved Myria, and through her came to love the city as well. Now, he sees it as his duty to protect those who cannot protect themselves, and he is grimly determined to do so.

Family:
Xantrian's grief caused him to withdraw from his family, and he hasn't seen any of them more than in passing since a few days after Myria's murder. He has one much younger brother, Josual Carver (age 22), and an older sister, Bethany Estreven (age 41). His father, Petyr, died more than 10 years ago, and his mother, Belianna, currently lives with his sister and her husband. Nobody in the family is well off, though they all manage to get by.

Xantrian and Katarina Doliu:
Xantrian first met Katarina when she joined the guard, following in the steps of her brother, Captain Piotr. He didn't think she handled the blade he forged for her all that well, but she took to the bow easily.

Not too long ago, while working at The Gilded Prawn, Xantrian heard of Captain Piotr and his patrol's death, with just Katarina surviving. Remembering the two of them, he felt some sorrow - they were two of the good ones. Upon hearing that Piotr's mutilated corpse was left on Katarina's door, that sorrow turned to the anger that's always so close to the surface these days. It was just another case of more hurt being inflicted on those undeserving, and it needed to stop.

Xantrian began looking for information about what happened to the patrol, and who might have been behind it. He hasn't yet had much luck, but he fully intends to find the bastards who did it, and once he does, he'll take that information to Katarina. If she's made up of the stuff he thinks she is, she'll want vengeance.

Xantrian and Darius Goldwin:
Darius is one of the few people Xantrian considers a friend. It seems at first an odd pairing - the angry, bitter man who seeks to protect the helpless and get vengeance on those who do wrong, and the harsh, ruthless merchant. Yet Xantrian sees more in Darius. He's witnessed Darius fight back against the unjust in his own quiet way.

Knowing that Darius hears much, he's often stopped by the pawn shop and told stories about the abused and helpless. More often than not, Darius has heard something and can pass along an important bit of information to lead Xantrian to the wicked to mete out his brand of vengeance.

One thing about Darius bothers Xantrian, however. For somebody who knows and hears so much, the merchant has had suspiciously little information about Gaedren Lamm. Xantrian suspects Darius is holding something back, and it's kept him from committing his full trust.
