Appearance
Always clean-shaven, with short, dark, rebellious hair, William looks younger than he is. His common outfit for any social occasion is a simple grey three-piece suit under a flowing overcoat, but he's more commonly encountered in a white shirt and blue vest, sleeves rolled up, when working on a sample. He often looks overworked and stressed, although he blames it on wartime shell-shock.

Backstory
Born in 1877 in the London outskirts, fourth of seven children, William's most impressive childhood accomplishment was surviving the diphtheria outbreak that took most of his family when he was twelve. The father, a factory worker, had died in a workplace accident, and the mother was taken by illness along with four of her children. Of the three surviving ones, the eldest brother would find his fortune in China as a trader before dying during the Boxer Rebellion, cut down by a nameless robber. The middle sister would find employment as a housemaid, a tiring life but not a hard one.
William's fortune, instead, was in the army. Blessed with a sharp mind from a young age, he managed to get into the colonial infantry corps. Shipped to India, he was trained as a field medic, cutting his teeth on the endemic illnesses. By the time he was 20, he had grown into a fine medic, even training for a while under Robert Koch as he came to India to study cholera.
In 1898 he was reassigned to South Africa, where the growing tensions between the British Empire and the Transvaal Republic were about to explode into the Second Boer War. He was stationed at Mafeking under Colonel Robert Baden-Powell when the city was besieged, and in the months of the siege he was awestruck by his brilliance and tactical acumen as he deceived the Boer assailants over and over. After the war, William resigned from the army, tired of blood and fighting, and moved over to New York.
Without significant wealth, he had some trouble getting recognized, and he didn't manage to work in a large hospital, but had to settle for a smaller clinic. There he kept on with his virology studies and, taking after the example of his beloved Impeesa, started a local branch of Scouts, carrying on the legacy of the boys at Mafeking.
