One idea I was just wondering about: is it possible to enforce a legal code that isnt based on,v"He killed me, let's go kill him!" ?

Mostly, is it fair or too much of an inconvenience to have characters arrested for crimes they commit in law enforced zones?

A couple examples:

1) Stranger A walks into town and murders Citizen B. townspeople C and D witness, report the crime, and the guards (both PC and NPC) come running. Stranger A could be cut down n the street, but what if he's just subdued - could he be arrested and jailed? If he's jailed, is he jailed until released or until a certain time limit is up? Or is he executed? If resurrections are part of the game, death penalties lose a bit of their sting, but incarceration could become downright cruel, unless well enforced.

2) Stranger E comes into town and is caught stealing from Merchant F. He can pay a fine and return the goods, or he can go to the lockup, or he can serve time on the chain gang. If he chooses jail, his character is now bound to prison. If he chooses the chain gang, he's bound to particular work.

So, maybe in this late night rambling, my question becomes: Can a character be forced to go somewhere the player doesn't want them to go if there are laws in a community that support the character going there?

I'd like to think that an enforceable legal code beyond offend-and-be-killed could be put in place, but I'd rather not have Sheriff Balor (played by John Q Public in Chicago) go around locking folks up indefinitely/indiscriminately. (Nothing against you, Windy City.)

Shorter yet: How does a virtual town's justice system work?

Thanks!

Just wanted to check if anyone has tried playing via Twitter, and if so, did it work? Not sure how dice would work.

Curious as it could make things a little more discrete in terms of content. Plus, the message boards are blocked at work.

Like the title says, in case we need it. Let me know if you have questions!

It is the fourth of Arodus, and Summer is on the wane. Slowly, but surely, the nights grow longer, and it feels as though the change to the fall months could be around the corner at any moment. The joy of Archerfeast, now a month past, was quickly overshadowed by more disturbing news from the trade caravans: goblin attacks, up and down the highway. It would appear as though the thorough thrashing they received a few years ago has been healed, and their "usual" chaos has a new edge. Caravaners describe the attacks containing bombardment by fireworks, many of a similar type to those used in the Swallowtail festival. The damage done by panicking horses is nearly as much as that done by the goblins themselves.

After a few reports of such news (the last of which involved serious injury to three caravaners) you are not surprised to see that Sheriff Balor has reposted the old bounty on Goblin ears: ten Celaxian gold sails for each ear, and three-hundred for the head of the Licktoad Tribe's chief, Gutwad, known to lead the Licktoad's from Brinestump Marsh. The number of adventurers in town has receded significantly since the troubles, and those who do stop by seem to have more interest in the recently uncovered Xin-Shalast than chasing down goblins in the dank, fetid, and downright spooky swamps southwest of town.

Sandru approaches you, Caiden, one night in the Rusty Dragon and claps you on the shoulder. "Well, my boy, this looks perfect! Well, here is a chance to not only quench your thirst for adventure, but will help in your profession as well - protect the town you've always loved, and protecting this caravaner's hide and haul! Hahahahahahahaha!" The burly Varisian gives a deep belly laugh that dies off when he sees you enter, Zelaria. "And what of you, dear sister? Has mother given you leave to figure out a way to repay me? Perhaps now we shall see if those fearsome markings are worth their surface area in silver and gold!"

Ameiko, behind the bar, simply chuckles and continue to pour drinks for the few regulars in the tavern that evening. "Oh, do encourage them, Sandru! It has been an age it seems since the last good tale walked through those doors! Oh, and if for some reason you are interested," she casually tosses each of you a look, "Father Zantus has a young acolyte of Erastil that is itching to get out of doors to 'aid the community,' and if I read Zantus right, he's ready for her to be out and about. Her name is Kharia, and you'll find her in the temple yard, more often than not." After serving a few more drinks, she also pipes up, "There are a few others in the area that might also be interested. Let me know if you are looking for any others!"

I am having some success running the serpent's skull AP as a one-player PBP experience, and I'd like to eventually approach the Carrion Crown AP in the same way. One thing I'm doing is giving the player the option to ally with the NPCs provided in the SS AP.

However, these are not offered in the CC AP. I'd like to request help in creating 5 compelling NPCs that are also friends of professor Lorrimor, who would have been called in to assist with the funeral. If you have time, or have created something like this already, I'd like to hear your ideas for Backstory options. Maybe it's for a character you created for this AP, maybe it's a brand new concept. Either way, I'd appreciate your insights. Thanks!

You have sailed aboard the Jenivere for many weeks now, and have come to trust the crew and command as brothers and fathers.  Captain Kovack, a stern and demanding man, is a true master of his trade, and plies the seas with enviable ease.  His first mate, Alton Devers, is fair and courteous to both crew and customer.

It is the 22nd day of Gozran when you weigh anchor in Magnimar.  A rather bookish woman had boarded a few days earlier and secured passage to Eleder in Sargava, a destination over three months travel away.  Shortly thereafter she disappeared below deck and you have not seen her since.

Just as you are about to pull up the gangplank, you hear a nasally voice call out, "Ahoy, Jenivere! Stay your plank for one more passenger, will you please?!" You look down and see a child sized figure in foppish attire sprinting quickly up the dock and onto the gangplank before bustling to a stop in front of the Captain.
Kovack looks at him sternly, and demands, "I'm of a mind to throw you back to Varisia, sir, unless you prove quickly that you have business elsewhere!"
The gnome straightens up quickly, and with a shallow bow produces a small pouch for the captain.  "Dear captain, my business dealings and trade have concluded here in sunny Magnimar, and as it happens I have just learned of a set of land holdings that are part of my inheritance in the Bandu Hills of the tropical Mwangi expanse.  I have heard that the Jenivere is the finest ship to sail on for such voyage.  Mint we come to an arrangement for safe transport?"
Kovack snorts, "Any man or half a man willing to die in the Bandu Hills is welcome to give me money for the privilege. We'll talk terms below." Looking over to where you have not yet pulled up the plank, the captain roars out, "Did I say belay you sluggard?  CAST OFF!" He takes the gnome below to discuss terms, and it is some time before the gnome re-emerges on deck to plop down on a crate and take in the smell of brine and the ocean spray. The Captain is not far behind, seemingly mollified and like quite well paid.

You are welcome to describe actions or attempted conversations at any point in the narrative, simply indicate approximately when you would like to do so and we will put it in the appropriate context.

I am interested in putting together the Serpent's Skull AP to GM as a one player experience.  I'd rather not try and juggle the schedules of 4-6 players on top of my own, and think this would lend itself to a bit more depth of storytelling. New players encouraged to apply.  Here's what I'm thinking:

I can post about once per 1.5 days, as I'm blocked from the boards at work and don't want to play by email.
The PC will be able to attempt to recruit from a selection of NPCs, some available immediately, more along the way.
Character creation
-Ability Scores: 15, 14, 13, 12, 10, 8
-HP: Max at 1st level
-Backstory: Include a significant event from the PCs family history, the PCs childhood and adolescence
-Gold: Max for class
-Traits: 2 total, one from the player's guide
-Classes: Core, APG, UM

Questions?  Post below.  I may not have remembered everything.

Recruitment closes 7/1/11 at 7:00 am EST. Game begins 7/4/2011 at 9:00 am EST.
