Wellby grew up middle class, though unlike his brothers did not excel in school or sport. His loyalty, positive personality, and charm was how he got by in Waterdeep - and how he worked his way into a finishing school and training for stewards of nobility.
Completing his education, he joined a dwarven household as the lead of the clan's children's residence. The next few decades he grew attached to the expatriate children and the liveliness of the household matched his own desire for variety and excitement. These years were the peak of his life and he treasures the memories still. When the guild business ended, the clan moved back to the mountains taking the children with them. Wellby remained in Waterdeep to care for his sick mother.
Finding a promotion by agreeing to work as the steward of a more wealthy and powerful household, Wellby joined the Silverview house. They gained their wealth on the back of their grandfather's discover of a seemingly unending vein of silver, and the current generation spent their days spending the money earned by that mining operation. They were cruel to their workers, choosing small races to work the house to bully them. While Wellby was treated much better, he still wished to leave - but the desperation of the staff and the hope to change things made him stay (along with the pay). Things were rocky but manageable until the head of the house Nathaniel Silverview died to an assassination. The new patriarch, Tanzer Silverview, was a dark and deviant man who spent all night cavorting with women and imbibing drugs and alcohol only to spend his days behind lock and key in his personal quarters and study.
Tracking the household spending became a fulltime job as strange deaths, sickness, and madness plagued the household. At his breaking point, Wellby broke into the master's study and tried to get to the bottom of where his money went to. There he found dark and occult tomes along with a collection of parts of various creatures and icons of dark powers. Horrified, Wellby reported his discovery to the town guard who stormed the house and arrested Tanzer in a controversial trampling of his privacy.
As the trial continued, the guard destroyed or confiscated valuables to the family and the legal fees mounted. The family begin to steal from each other and flee to the countryside to start new lives as the noble courts openly mocked them and their inability to control their staff. Wellby was never fired, but he was the only soul left in an empty and stripped house as the core family sold the mine and moved away inviting the entire staff but him. He oversaw the final sale of the manor before finally being relieved of his service.
Since then, Wellby has only been able to find work with guilds and organizations seeking a spy and a traitor - two things he still does not consider himself. He bounced job to job before finally finding work traveling the Sword Coast interfacing with nobility for an adventuring company and serving as quartermaster. He longs for his past, but does not regret any action he took - instead he is saving his coin to move and rediscover his career with a new house once more.
