Character Background:
Vitalia's ancestors came to Mendev from Cheliax during the Third Crusade, members of a group of low templars and Order of the God Claw Hellknights. Among the Hellknights were the paladin Aurelio Cardona and his sister Antonina, a bard. Antonina married Joel Delonauth, a knight, and bore one son and two daughters, while Aurelio wed a Kellid woman, bearing three sons and three daughters. Vitalia's father Jenaro, the youngest son, never took much to fighting. Instead, he became a blacksmith, marrying an inkeeper, who bore him one daughter.

Raised in her father's trade, Vitalia grew up hearing stories of the crusades from her aunts, uncles, and cousins. She eventually joined a band of knights during the Fourth Crusade in 4705, where she proved herself an able fighter. While on campaign in the last year of the crusade, she was badly injured, and has spent the years since her recovery training new recruits.

Appearance and Personality:
A sharp-featured, worn-looking woman in her late twenties, Vitalia attracts little attention among the battle-scarred and colorful adventurers and soldiers of Kenabres. Her most distinctive feature is a massive scar that cuts deeply through the left side of her face, starting at her lower lip, passing across a badly-healed cheekbone and brow, and ending near her left temple. Vitalia's clothing and equipment are fairly standard: soot-blackened chainmail and leather armor worn under a red-and-white tabard, a simple but well-kept longsword, and a round wooden shield covered in numerous small pyramidal studs.

Though a crusader, Vitalia is hardly a zealot, preferring not to make enemies and to give everyone the benefit of the doubt. She prefers not to take sides in debates, though she will take a stand against something that is clearly immoral, unethical, or downright evil. In most situations, Vitalia is reserved, rigidly polite, methodical, and focused, though in social situations she tends to be quiet and awkward. While a follower of Iomedae, she retains a measure of her grandfather's faith in the God Claw, shown by the unique holy symbol she carries--rather than the silver sunburst and sword, Vitalia's pendant is of steel, and features a five-pointed star in place of Iomedae's rays of light.
