About Vindu the Chainbreaker

Background::
Vindu’s earliest memories place him somewhere in the Archduchy of Ravounel. He was born into a slave camp and his childhood and adolescent memories were ruled mostly by obedience and fear, his only real friends his parents and his bedroll. However, his memory of his parents is very dim, as they died sometime during his adolescent years, his father crushed by a falling boulder to be used in a pillar and his mother of a brutal whipping for not moving quite fast enough for a certain Hellknight slave driver. Vindu always remembered the look in his mother’s eyes as she realized what the end felt like. He always remember that cruel smile on the Hellknight, the way it creased over the long scar on his right eye. This left Vindu as the only Vanaran left in the slave camp, even more isolated than before. However, Vindu was in a somewhat favorable position in comparison to the other slaves, as his natural climbing ability frequently found him perched high on pillars and the sides of buildings laying mortar and bricks. While marginally more dangerous, this positioned earned him nothing but disdain from his fellow slaves, who viewed his work as easier and left them with the heavy lifting and hauling of stone and mixing of mortar. This left Vindu with not a single friend in the entire camp, but he did not feel alone. You see, from his high vantage points, he could just barely make out the tree line of the Ravounel Forest. He couldn’t help but smile at the scurrying squirrels, the verdant, leaves, the swaying of the trees in the wind. He would even sometimes catch a glimpse of a stag looking curiously on the edge of the forest before turning back into the forest. Vindu envied that freedom, that carefree nature, the ability to go wherever one chose, to do whatever one wanted. So, it was on one of these lucky days that Vindu decided he had enough. From his vantage points he was able to notice the discrepancies in the patrols, the brief seconds areas were left unguarded on the scaffolds during shift changes. After weeks of study, Vindu finally attempted his escape. Rolling silently out of his bedroll, he crept through the sleeping mass of slaves, unseen by the guards. He waited patiently for the guard change to happen on the nearest scaffold and he leaped up to the top. From here he saw that glorious green tree line off the gleam of the braziers that lined the camp. He was lost for a moment in that freedom he could almost taste, he failed to hear the next guard walking up the ramp behind him.
“You, slave. Oh it must be my lucky day.”
Vindu turned around and immediately froze. He knew this man. He recognized that cruel smile, that jagged line across the right eye. The same smile he saw reflected in his mother’s eyes, the same scar that caused him so much isolation. This face was a representation of everything Vindu had come to resent. An ideology he vowed never to bow too.
Something awoke in Vindu in that moment. A primal rage he had never felt. His face twisted into a feral scowl. Vindu unleashed a cry of pure fury and anguish as he lunged at his tormentor, striking with new claws Vindu did not have before. The Hellknight was so stunned by the sudden change from timid ape to vicious animal he could not defend from the onslaught and was felled in just a few swipes. As his oppressor fell, Vindu quickly realized the alarm had been sounded. He used his newfound spryness to leap across the scaffolds, deftly dodging the incoming whips and nets from the slave drivers responding to his escape, and in his time since, Vindu has felt no similar joy, and no feeling of euphoria, as when he hit the soft grass just outside the tree line.
Vindu traveled straight north for a ways, learning what berries were edible and hunting the the rabbits and squirrels for protein as he traveled onward. His travels lead him through the country of Molthune, in which he watched the great armies march ever onward in disgust. He cringed as he passed sawmills that chewed the forests he so loved like a great meal, an ever-hungry maw bent on nature’s destruction. He finally made it to the edge of the Fangwood forest in Nirmathas, when he was beset upon by a pack of wolves. He had battled his fair share of predators on his way, but Vindu knew that the odds were not in his favor against the pack of 6 wolves that surrounded him. As they closed in, Vindu sprouted his claws and bared his teeth, ready to fight to the death, a great stag charged through the undergrowth and flung the nearest wolf into the side of the tree and grunted. The wolves, visibly disheartened, retreated back into the depths of the Fangwood. Vindu stood visibly in awe, but his claws were still out and ready. The stag shook it’s head from side to side, before it melded into a the form of an elven male.
“I mean you know harm, beast one. Do you understand me?”
Vindu’s claws retracted and he stood more upright before replying. “Yes, I am no feral. Thank you for your help. I surely would have perished if not for you.”
The elf smiled. “Tell me, have you been touched by nature?”
Vindu chuckled. “I have traveled a long way, surviving off nature’s bounty.”
The elf beckoned for Vindu to follow as he walked through the forest, ignoring the briars and undergrowth as he did so. Vindu followed the elf in silence and awe for quite some time before reaching a lake with two islands. Vindu could see many buildings on the shore and he watched children frolic across the beaches and the fields, he watched elves and dwarves, and humans clothed in leaves and fine leather walk across winding paths through the town.
The elf turned to Vindu. “This place is known as Crystalhurst. It is a haven for people like you and I, kept secret from those different. I must discus with the council before you can be allowed to live here permanently, but if you can prove your worth and your devotion to out way, you could live here and be free.”
Vindu was overjoyed at the prospect of finally having a home not wrought from pain and stone. It was here Vindu learned of the Green Faith, of the ever encroaching Blight that threatened the Fangwood. He took up his place as a protector of nature and of Crystalhurst, defending the forests from bandits, poachers, and the Blight infested fey. He sometimes tells children stories of his travels, for which they affectionately named him "Chainbreaker". He learned of the nearby town of Phaendar and the tri-monthly Market Festival. It was there he met Aubrin the Green, whom he saw as a mentor and who fostered a dream to join the Chernasardo rangers, where Vindu believed he could better protect the forest and the land he now called home.

Code of Ethics::
Vindu prioritizes the protection of the natural order and Crystalhurst above all else. Below that, he protects the lands of Nimrathas as a whole. He is extremely loyal to those he considers friends, however his time as a slave has made him wary strangers, especially humans. Vindu refuses to stand for slavery in any way, shape, or form.

Description::
Vindu stands just around 5ft tall. While not imposing in height one can still spot the rippling muscles beneath his golden brown fur. He wears dark brown trousers overlaid with bits of bone and wood, his right arm hosts a deer skull as a makeshift pauldron that is held in place by several leather straps across his chest. He has a pattern of darker brown hair that begins on his head and moves down in a triangle, the point ending right at his middle back. Even if he walks proudly now, his flesh still bears the scars of his time as a slave. He has several long lashes across his back from frequent whippings and his wrists have patches of fur missing from where the shackles scraped his skin almost to the bone. While his appearance might be seen as wild and untamed, Vindu is well-liked around Phaendar and he walks proudly through the forests and streets of Nirmathas.

Personality:
Vindu's years of being a slave took it's toll on his social expertise. Vindu tries his best to be polite, but he has a habit of speaking whatever is on his mind. Even as such, Vindu is well liked in Phaendar and Crystalhurst, as he is quick to defend those being treated unfairly. He is slow to pick up social cues and in such settings he tends to stay towards the edges of the gathering, either perched in a tree or posted in a corner, observing with a smile. Vindu remembers vividly his time under the Hellknight's yoke, frequently assaulted by nightmares of such times. Vindu refuses to tolerate slavery in any form. He also has a great sense of honor, which he values almost as much as his strength. Vindu prefers direct solutions to problems, but he is not above nor below critical thinking and indirect solutions, so long as the problem is solved in the end. Vindu's pride is his biggest weakness, as he is quick to anger when he is called into question. Even still, it is not difficult to convince him of his shortcomings, once he calms down. Harboring a deep distrust of strangers, especially humans, Vindu is slow to trust. But once he considers you a friend, he is impossible to get rid of and he is loyal to the end.
