Vespartius hails from Corentyn, where his parents were middle ranking members of the city guard. Shortly before he was born, a murderous cult of the demon lord Shax plagued the city, eventually fighting the guards head to head. Vespartius’ parents saw many of their comrades horrifically murdered by the cultists and their summoned allies, but the city was saved by Hellknights of the Order of the Chain, who swept in and rapidly dispatched the cult. This left Vespartius’ parents with huge admiration for the Hellknights, and they resolved that their son would join the imposing ranks of the defenders of order. As Vespartius grew up, he internalized this expectation and went to train at the Order of the Chain’s Citadel Gheradesca as soon as he was old enough. However, his physical weakness and lack of martial skill prompted his instructors to expel Vespartius, as they knew he would never be able to defeat a barbazu in hand to hand combat. Deeply ashamed, Vespartius broke contact with his parents and traveled to Egorian, where he decided that his route to power would be magic rather than brute force. After acquiring a rudimentary magical education, Vespartius sought out the Order of the Gate, in which his lack of physical prowess would be more acceptable. He has been training for the last several years to become a full-fledged hellknight and finally fulfill his parents’ wish by taking his place among the protectors of civilization. Personality:
While a significant reason for Vespartius joining the Hellknights was his parents’ urging, he does firmly believe in the organization’s tenets. In his cynical view, most people will make bad decisions and damage society if given the freedom to do so, and therefore must be strictly policed by enforcers of order. Vespartius also believes that the best way to protect civilization is to be proactive and stamp out any problems before they can grow, while setting up systems to prevent any problems from arising in the future. His chosen method of accomplishing these aims is arcane magic, specifically the binding of devils, and he has a degree of contempt for those who lack the ability to bend reality with words and instead rely on crude material weapons. At the same time, he does realize that melee capability is valuable in minions.
Vespartius is evil, but this evil is merely a willingness to do virtually anything and consort with virtually anyone in pursuit of ultimate order. He abhors the sadistic, pointless evil exhibited by some, though he certainly sees fear as a useful tool. While he is absolutely committed to the maintenance of order, Vespartius’ loyalty to the leadership of the Order of the Gate is comparatively limited. He sees it as the organization most in line with his views and thus is happy to serve it, but would be willing to leave or betray it if he no longer agreed with the Order. For the moment, however, his chief concern is not being brutally murdered by the raging devil he is soon to face. |
