Background/History:
Vesera was born 25 years ago, to a young woman of the Arkona family, one of the most powerful noble families in Korvosa, some say even the most powerful. To not insult the Mierani Elves, which could have caused severe diplomatic incidents, she was recognized as a member of the family, but despite all that, she never was truely "one of them". It had been made very clear to her throughout her life that she would never rise to any position of power within the family, nor gain any official title aside from the bare minimun that was necessary to keep the apearance. She also knew that when she was older she was supposed to enter the Academae for her education, usually a great honor but in this case simply the easiest way to get rid of her.
One night, she was 16 and had just begun her studies at the Academae a year before - which she actually enjoyed quite alot - a squad of Hellknights stormed her room, and arrested her on the charges of murder. A local fisherman claimed he saw how she put a spell on a man, and while he was entranced by her, she had made him cut his own heart out, which she then supposedly had eaten while it was still beating. Of course that was a wrong accusation, two other students could confirm she had been at the Academae the whole time, but somehow one of the guards found a bloody knife beneath her bed. Most likely due to the witness statements of the students and her family she was not immediately executed, but was still arrested. When the next day the fisherman turned up dead, beaten into a nearly unrecognizeable pulp, rumors again were saying that of course she was responsible for this. With the main and only witness against her dead however, there was no clear proof of her guilt, as the knife was not strong enough evidence, and the Hellknights were forced by the law to let her go. Just when she thought everything was turning out fine and returned to the Academae, she was intercepted at the gate, and told to leave. They would not have practitioners of such dark and obviously evil arts at this place, and if she'd ever return they'd give her a taste of all the arcane secrets that she had not yet learned. The thing that did not surprise her however was the public statement by her family, declaring all ties to her void. She knew they had just waited for an oportunity like that, even when it was obviously a setup. For some time she had even believed they were behind it from the start, till she found out the truth: The murder had been commited by a crimelord named Gaedren Lamm. Why he had cut out the heart, she didn't know, perhaps simply to give it a more "occult" look. Having lost everythign Vesera survived the next months mostly by stealing what she needed and taking the few odd jobs that she had any chance of doing. She wasn't very strong, so she couldn't work at the docks, she certainly wasn't fast or ruthless enough to join the thieves' guild, and those that might employ her as a scribe would mostly recognize her and send her away.
She hadn't actually expected to have a hand for healing, but it turned out it wasn't that hard actually, and not so much different from the magical exercises she had performed at the Academae. And something else that she hadn't expected: She enjoyed it. She knew she couldn't change the world, or even the city from her place in it, but each time she helped on of those people, cured one of their ills or even helped them bring a baby into this world, she kew that she had made it a tiny bit brighter for them. And that gave her hope for herself as well. Two years ago her teacher had died, not of illness or injury but of old age, one of the few things neither of them could do anything about. Since then she had been responsible for the people of the district, and sometimes she was even glad for the events that seemingly had ruined her life. Sometimes. |
