About Veris Skarlock

Veris Skarlock was born to Korut Skarlock and his concubine Zyrcsy in Egorian, Cheliax. A minor up and coming family of "advocates" or money launderers for some noble family's sins and vices. This influence and Korut's determination were able to enroll Veris in schools. Korut's patron was even able to get Veris into the Church of Asmodeus after he completed his primary schooling. While attending his secondary school Veris found he thoroughly enjoyed learning the Laws of Hell as well as the laws his homeland. His devoted study of the law placed him on the course to becoming a barrister of Chelish Law. Dreams of rising above being an "advocate" of a noble family and becoming an Advocate of Asmodeus and a judge inspired Veris to master his studies. During his law schooling Veris was also taught to become clergy of Asmodeus, to assist with the cost of law school. He did not relish in the rituals and ceremonies but performed his service with precision and attentiveness. Veris learned not only about the law and religion, but also, he learned of the Pit and other planes. His favorite subjects outside of the law was the histories of Golarion, with a focus on Chelish Imperialism.

Veris found himself at odds with some of his peers during debates and arguments. He would get caught up in their twisting of words and law to meet their own agendas. He would continue to argue until blue in the face about the importance of the recorded law, not the twisting and wiggling of words that other students. His focus on studying his opponent's words, body language, and mannerism lent him an advantage when presenting his own deliberations. He often left opponents dumbfounded by the words spewing from his lips. He spent time with these other students showed them how he could "read" their argument before they even finished speaking. They showed him how to bend his argument to be presented in a not entirely untrue manner. The students all prospered together.

At a Signing Day celebration, during one of the open public debates Veris was given an opponent with whom he had no chance of beating, the opponent was a Devil in human guise. The rhetoric and deliberation on Hell's laws and Laws went back and forth for minutes, until after an hour Veris was able to confuse his opponent into admitting defeat. Proud of his mortal opponent at besting him the Imp, Arhgened, promised his human opponent a gift, a serpent materialized on the spot and was granted to Veris for his devout service and devotion to the Laws of Hell.

Upon finishing Law School, Veris was required to complete his ecclesiastical training. He learned to make a copy of himself to confuse and distraction his opponents, but also to draw the eye to him and focus the crowd to his arguments. He was capable of transcribing his divine magics to words on the written page. He wasn't prone to hurting others like some of his clergical peers, when he focused he was able to spare a few friends or allies when presenting his unholy wrath on his enemies. Upon completing his training Veris was made an acolyte of the Asmodean Church.

His first assignment was to travel to Korvosa* and present himself to the church** there and to be at their disposal, commonly as a litigation lawyer.
