About Venture-Captain Aurelius
House Cato is a minor noble house of Taldor. Aurelius grew up in the spacious villa within Oppara. His father was a mid-level bureaucrat within the judicial administration. It was assumed that Aurelius would follow in his father’s footsteps and take up government work. Aurelius had something different in mind.
Aurelius had been enamoured by the stories of the Phalanx from a young age. He felt that military duty should be a requirement for all citizens, and that the discipline and camaraderie would do the bickering nobility some good. To that end he did something almost entirely unheard of in the ranks of decadent nobles – he enlisted.
Aurelius was an exceptional soldier, and had a brilliant mind for tactics. He rose rapidly through the ranks and was given his own command. His unit saw numerous successes in skirmishes defending the borders and protecting the roads. Bandits were the usual threat, and Aurelius’ unit was able to decrease attacks on more dangerous parts of the road significantly.
Of course success leads to attention, and a noble of significant station, Alton of House Nevastain, had called upon the Phalanx to wipe out a veritable den of thieves. The plan was tactically unsound, but went forward despite Aurelius’ protests. Of course the operation was a disaster, but Aurelius managed to keep the majority of those under his command alive.
In order to avoid blame, Alton laid responsibility of the failure at Aurelius’ feet, and he word of a noble of higher station carried enough weight to have his command stripped. Now Aurelius seeks to redeem his honor, and also his country. His skills prove useful to the Pathfinders, and he believes that perhaps redemption might lie along a path forged for that group.
