Varus notes, first he checks with Madam Mvashti if she has found anything about the symbol, then he heads for the church for any information about undead, such as closest place where one might have come from.

In both places he also inquires about any scrolls/potions of remove curse/cure insanity/calm emotions or anything similar. Figuring that such items may come in handy later when they interrogate the insane bodyguard.
