About Vanthos, the Most Powerful Mage
Vanthos will tear you up! With magic!
At least, that's what he would tell anyone who ever challenged him physically. Following one extended round of bluster and lies, he had claimed to be both the most powerful mage in all Absalom and a member of the Pathfinder Society (as the Most Powerful Mage is known to be).
In order to avoid a fight he couldn't win that would have hurt innocents, he had to walk into Skyreach, the grand lodge of the Pathfinders in Absalom. He got snagged by a recruiter there and ended up signing away the next three years of his life...
Assigned as a bodyguard to one of the senior pathfinders who attracted ambushes like flies (he attracted those too actually...), Vanthos was getting pretty bored. Then his 'boss' let him look at his spare spellbook with all the 'useless evocation spells', and he nicked borrowed a treatise-in-progress on Thassilonian magic. After all, how hard could it be...
