Backstory:
Valen emerged from a stasis a few years ago, completely disoriented. He managed to scavenge together a small shelter from the scraps of debris nearby. After narrowly surviving an attack by some savage creature, Valen set about building a weapon to defend himself. Disatisfied with a simple dagger or club, Valen used the functional pieces of his stasis chamber to build a primitive firearm.
Unfortunately, Valen didn't have to wait long for an opportunity to test his new creation. A man stumbled into the small hollow where Valen had built his home. The man was bleeding from his leg and shoulder as he glanced back over his shoulder in fear. Valen readied his weapon, and didn't hesitate when the pursuing creature tore over the ridge into the crater. Valen's single shot rang true, and the beast that had harried the two men lay dead at their feet.
Thankful for his aid, and fascinated by his origins, the wizard Khonnir Baine invited Valen to his home for some rest and so the wizard could reward him properly. Through late night talks and mutual curiosity, a few days quickly became weeks, and weeks passed on into years. Valen showed a natural aptitude for math, engineering and the arcane, so Khonnir offered to take the android on as an apprentice.
As he began to learn, Valen began tinkering with the weapon that had slain the beast a few years earlier. While Khonnir was fascinated by the occasional piece of technology he would find or hear about, Valen sought to create something he had seen long ago, perhaps in a dream. It was not long before the young wizard apprentice began blending magic and gunsmithing, and he soon found a way to fire not just bullets, but globules of arcane energy, the precursor to the more refined ray spells to come.
