About Vaelor Barksdale

Background:
Vaelor (VAY-lor) Barksdale has always known he is a bastard. Women who share his mother's profession usually never know for certain which trick was responsible. Most likely it was some sailor or pirate who visited the house before leaving her for the seas. Thus, his surname is that of his mother's family.

Growing up in a whorehouse in Port Peril doesn't set one up for high morals. The mystery of his father's identity may have been what led him to spend his time at a tavern near the ports where old pirates drank themselves to death. Instead of playing games with other children, Vaelor would often look for some sort of sign or recognition that would lead to him finding his father.

Although he never found out if any of the customers were his dad, two regulars took a liking to him. Over the years they taught him some of their tricks (such as picking locks and how to silently approach someone) and their wisdom of the sea. His "fathers" often told him that he was marked for greatness, and instilled in him everything that they had learned.

As a teenager Vaelor used this knowledge to find work as a deckhand. Now a young man and his "fathers" deceased, he has been yearning for something more than earning a meager income by the hard living working under the various captains of merchant vessels. Perhaps he is beginning to believe in the words that the old pirates told him all those years in his youth.

The old tavern he frequented as a young one closed a year or so ago. Vaelor now frequents the Formidably Maid, but its customers and propretors have never seemed as warm to him as his favorite old tavern.
