Background:
Vadim is a skilled, if somewhat bored, man from the southern regions of Ustalav. He served as the captain of the guard for the local ruler, Baron Heinrich Greyend, guarding the noble’s estate while he spent most of his time in Caliphas engaged in the careful political games of the nobility. However, this left the baron’s young, beautiful wife alone and very board in their isolated country estate. Vadim found himself becoming closer to the lonely noble woman and they quickly found themselves falling in love. After a few months, they fell into a passionate affair. Until she seemingly fell ill. Vadim watched with growing horror as her life ebbed away until she finally died.

Vadim fell in to a deep depression, contemplating ending his own life so he might follow his love in to the next life. However, he was saved when a mysterious messenger delivered a haunting message seemingly written by his dead lover’s hand. He rushed to confront whoever sent the message and was shocked to discover that she did still walk the earth, but she was not among the living. A vampire had turned the baroness and she had carefully staged her own death so she could free herself from her absent husband and establish her power among Ustalav’s undead courts. Vadim was overwhelmed by the revelation that his love was now immortal and freed from the confines of human weakness. His lover began to teach him the ways of undeath, sharing the secrets that she’d learned from her own sire shortly before she ended his unlife and claimed his seat of power.

Vadim embraced the teachings with a passion, completely drawn in by the ideal that he and the baroness could be together for ever. As her only truly trusted confidant, he swore that he would ascend to the heights of undeath and join her in eternity as her consort and guardian. Wanting to prove himself worthy of eternity with his lover, he rode forth, leaving Ustalav and heading south to spread the power of death and blacken his soul until he was so stained with the power of death that he would rise again as one of the eternal undead so he might reunite with his love and rule by her side for an eternity.
