BACKSTORY

Tris & Anhaku:

Tris, also known as "Miraculina," "Countess Starshine," and "The Blessing," among other names, is a Drathnelar, an Umbral Gnome selling supposed miracle elixirs and other snake oil in the Inner Sea region around Absalom. When asked about her age and her origins, Tris always answers happily and freely, but her stories are so fanciful and change so often that one has to wonder if she actually remembers the truth herself.

What seems clear is that she must have come from the Darklands originally, eventually realizing that her gray skin, milky-white eyes, and bald head were bad for business. She kept the milky eyes, leaning into their otherworldliness, but has become extremely adept at using makeup and colorful wigs to project a disarming sense of whimsy that is about as genuine as the wares she's selling.

When she is in Taldor, she supplies minor nobles carefully selected for their gullibility with "genuine royal magical mummy parts from Osirion." Would those nobles still grind them down into powder and mix them into their wine if they knew they are really remains of the Whispering Tyrant's invasion army? Tris certainly spends quite some time digging in the Cairnlands around Absalom. Likewise, her gently glowing "Fey healing salve" would perhaps not be quite as popular in Andoran if Tris' customers saw the Gnome squeeze the substance out of the intestines of Flash Beetles in the Darklands. In fact, however, Tris seems to have been getting away with her shtick for a long time, mostly thanks to her minor healing abilities: she insists her clients always try a free sample before the deal as she heals them, and sells such low quantities of the "exclusive" merchandise that, when the effect inevitably runs out, her clients are eagerly waiting for the next delivery.

Not too long ago, Tris was perhaps too successful for her own good. Due to an address mixup, Tris happened to help a lonely Chelaxian widower in Westcrown, realizing too late that her client was actually dying and, more importantly, unable to pay. The dying man mistook Tris' lamentable lapse for kindness and included her prominently in his dying prayer. The recipient of this prayer was the goddess Iomedae in Heaven. Since the unassuming man had suffered greatly for The Inheritor in the torture chambers of House Thrune during his lifetime, his dying wish was processed with the highest priority.

This is how the unlucky Cassian Anhaku became Tris' guardian angel.

Realizing almost instantly that Tris was not exactly adhering to Iomedae's edicts of temperance, justice, and honor, the Archive Angel tried to argue fervently that this was a mistake to be remedied. She was duly informed that Tris had technically acted kindly and, more importantly, that the wish was not hers, but the believer's. Besides, all the forms were already filed and all the boxes were checked correctly. Her angel-coworkers somewhat gleefully added that an angel of Anhaku's supposed glowing righteousness would surely take this as a challenge to guide a mortal soul toward valor for the rest of that mortal's life?

Ever since, a bit of time has passed, a lot of very unkind words have been exchanged, and Tris and Anhaku have settled into a grudging co-existence. Tris has learned to appreciate the angel's sometimes unwitting help and to tune out Anhaku's moral lectures. It helps that it's quite hard to tell when Tris's white eyes glaze over. Anhaku has come to like the thick of battle, certainly because it's a practical opportunity to protect Tris, as is legally required, but also to vent her frustration. One thing is for sure: when Anhaku is occasionally thrown back to Heaven, her fellow Cassians no longer insinuate she's a couch philosopher.

Tris' recent decision to join the Pathfinder Society as a means of developing new clientele and adding more credence to her schemes has been welcomed by Anhaku — primarily, of course, because working together with hopefully more morally upstanding adventurers may teach Tris a thing or two about the power of Good. It would be slander to suggest that it has crossed Anhaku's mind how many Pathfinder agents' files she has archived in the past after their lives were tragically cut short in service of the Society.
