Pitch:
While the fighting continues around Lake Encarthan, Traine father sent him and his companion, a she wolf named Athena, south after their house burned down and the rest of the family went with his father somewhere else. As he was the oldest, he could make it on his own and father had him go.
Finding a caravan heading in the direction that he was going anyway, Traine spoke with Bort and offered his services as hunter and guide on the journey. A young man, just out of his teens, Traine is somewhat somber after he and his family watched their house burn down, however as the journey continues his normal buoyant self begins to show more and more, especially as he continues to train and play with his wolf. When combat comes, and it will as he knows well, Traine will loose an arrow, and then fight side by side with Athena. Asking and giving no quarter.
Ancestry: Human
Notes:
Our DM pointed us to this thread, since last night (Monday 10/31) we fought the Mother and there are no spoilers here.... My ranger character, Traine, died, as well as the barbarian character, Crusher, died. We stupidly entered the darkness that she cast and then proceeded to fail almost every disease and paralyze save and she just took turns chomping on us. The 3 others in the party, Ishirou, cleric and sorcerer could not hit anything. We *had* killed all the other undead, so they ran, regrouped with all the other NPCs (less Gellick as died earlier) and came back to finish off the weakened Mother. Jask used the raise dead scroll on Crusher, and I am bringing in a new character. Oh, the DM was rolling 20's darn near all night long. His dice were smoking!, while we couldn't hit or save worth anything. With the way we were rolling last night, the only way we could have beaten her without deaths is if we had an elf tank in the party who was immune to the paralyze. -- david

I am Aerys, a poet and guard for the camp while the others were out exploring the island. I will respect Traine's wishes and attempt to forward this journal to his father. They returned after clearing out the lighthouse area and were sorely wounded. Jask spent all of his healing energies last night to heal them back up so we could move to the fort and begin work on restoring the lighthouse so we can get off this miserable island. While myself, Jask, Pezock and Sasha were making the place more livable and inspecting the lighthouse, the rest took off down the hole in the ground to clear it out so there were no surprises. After a while, they came back and asked if we could all come down as there were some carvings and writing on what looked like a temple wall and in another cave, as well as a note left by the Captain of the Jenivere. I was able to translate since it was in Aklo, an almost dead language. Captain note, translations of wall writings:
In the Inner Sanctum: To Command the Very Tides to Rise Up and Eschew What Lies Below: Empower the Four Sentinel Runes with the Blood of a Thinking Creature Tempered by the Kiss of a Serpent’s Tongue. Anoint the Tide Stone with Waters Brought from the Sea in a Vessel of Purest Metal. Invoke the Lord’s Sacred Name to Wrap His Coils around the Sea Itself that He Might Lay Bare What Lies Below and Cast Down Your Enemies on the Waves above. In the cave with the other drawings:
Captain's note:
That Ieana has abandoned me here is nothing more than the fate I deserve. I do not beg forgiveness, but I despair that she lives still, and that she seeks something dire on this forsaken isle—she seemed particularly interested in Red Mountain. If you read this and you be a kind soul, seek out what I have become and destroy me, and then seek out Ieana and slay her as well. And to those whose lives I have helped destroy, I can only apologize from this, my dark cradle and darker grave.
We came back up and they continued exploring. A little while later, Jasper, Ishirou and Jig-ren-doh came back and said that both Traine and Crusher were dead, and we all needed to head back down and finish off the Mother of the cannibals. We did so after a hard battle. After it was done, Jask said that she must have been an undead cleric of the snake god. Sasha told us that Traine would not wish to be brought back as they had gotten to know each other well while standing last watch together, so Jask used the scroll of raise dead to bring back Crusher, and we buried Traine out in the jungle. We found a journal at the camp we could read parts of it. It was a journal from ship the Thrune's Fang that shipwrecked here 70 years ago. The journal entries that were able to read are: ...many survived, the Thrune’s Fang will never sail again. Sargava’s assimilation must proceed without... ...fine hunting on the Shiv, but the bugs are a constant distraction. Nylithati’s skills at healing help fight the sickness, but I fear she has... ...founded. Nylithati has seized control of my crew. They are hers now. And so I have abandoned... ..fine home. Fresh water nearby and I need not endure Nylithati’s ceaseless raving about... ...will not be returning to that gray, silent island again. There is nothing there but horror... ...crew lurking about the area. They seem strange, almost feral. It has been almost a decade since the wreck. I wonder what strange beliefs Nylithati has... ...changed. There was no sign of Nylithati in the camp, but the focus of their ceremony was a cauldron they must have salvaged from the Thrune’s Fang at the base of the ruined lighthouse. It was into this they threw the half-eaten body of the still screaming man... ...all around. I can hear them chanting in the green even now. They call Nylithati “Mother Thrunefang” now, and promise me immortality if I lay down my arms and submit. I know what their immortality consists of, and I’ll have no part of that corrupt life after... Kuthona 10 (Day 64)

Nightvoice Journal: This derelict is the wreck of the Nightvoice, a large Pathfinder Society exploration vessel that originally hailed from Almas. The Nightvoice has been wrecked here for decades after it mysteriously vanished on an attempted voyage around the southern coast of Garund. In fact, the explorers were well on their way home to Almas to report their findings to their lodge when a strange leathery pod they’d discovered in a seaside cavern burst open, infecting nearly the entire crew with russet mold spores—only Captain Havner Ames managed to resist the infection. As he watched his friends and crew succumb to the infection, he knew that he couldn’t allow the strange bulb (which had closed up on itself and was pulsing with a foul life, as if replenishing its store of spores) to reach the coast. Yet the Nightvoice was now adrift on a current that would swiftly take it to the coast of Sargava. It was all Captain Ames could do to alter the large ship’s course on his own so that it instead crashed against the rocks here. Delirious and mad, Captain Ames abandoned the wrecked ship and climbed over the island, hoping to find a place to hide the fungal bulb away where it could do no more damage.

I awake on a beach with a big lobster biting my foot and feeling sick to my stomach. I see my falchion in a pile of gear about ten feet away, so I stand, run and grab it. There are three of these lobsters and they decide that I am too awake for them and move to my companions and attack! A short brutal battle later, Crusher and I have killed two and Jasper uses magic to kill the other (so that is what he does!). They look like they will make good dinner. We wake up Master Jig-wren-doh and Jaqen. Also Gelik, Sasha, Aerys, Jask and Ishorou are with us and we wake them. We decide that we have crashed on the Serpent's Shiv Island. Master Jig-wren-doh inspects us all, and has determined that we all ate taggat poison at dinner last night and the sickness should wear off in a bit. Inspecting the shore, Jasper of all people finds rowboat tracks. It seems that someone took us off the ship and deposited us here along with all our gear. Looking around we see a wrecked ship about a half hour walk down the beach, and as it is still low tide we decide to head out now while we can still walk to the ship. It is a good thing that we came now. The Jenivere will probably be dragged out to sea when high tide comes in as only part of it remains. As we investigate the ship, Crusher and I kill another one of those lobsters, this one bigger than the three on the beach. We find the body of 1st Mate Alton Devers, and Master Jig-wren-doh determines that he has some rapier wounds that are a few days old, but he died from bites similar to what the lobster claws would do. Someone remembers that the Captain had a rapier. This is getting scary. We also find the cooks body and he was poisoned also, however he has snake bites on his neck that are actually what killed him. Now, no one had a snake on board that we know of, unless it was Ieana. In the Captains room and the storehouse area we find a lot of equipment that we can use to setup a camp, as well as 12 potions. Jasper with Master Jig-wren-doh's help identify 9 of them and since they are mostly healing, Crusher and I take the lions share. We also find the Captains Log and our worst fears are realized. An examination of the Captains Log reveals that the Jenivere’s captain seemed to be suffering from some sort of madness that grew over the course of the ship’s final voyage. Earlier entries from previous voyages are precise in recording progress and events along the way, as are entries from the first two-thirds of this last trip. Yet as one reads further, the more recent the entries get, the less common they become—in some cases, several days are missing entries. What entries do appear are strangely short, focusing more and more on one of the passengers—the Varisian scholar Ieana, with whom the captain seems to have become obsessed. Several entries are nothing more than poorly written love poems to Ieana, while others bemoan Captain Kovack’s inability to please her or catch her attention. Near the end, the entries begin to take on a more ominous tone with the captain starting to complain that other members of the crew are eyeing “his Ieana.” In particular, he suspects his first mate is in love with her, and writes several times about how he wishes Alton would just “have an accident.” The final entry is perhaps the most disturbing, for in it the captain writes of how he’s changed course for Smuggler’s Shiv at Ieana’s request. He hopes that the two of them can make a home on the remote island, but also notes that the crew are growing increasingly agitated at the ship’s new course. The captain muses that “something may need to be done about the crew” if their suspicions get any worse. Part of what we find is a fine bottle of brandy. I will keep that hidden from Aerys since she seems to be drunk most of the time. Perhaps we can help her. Ah, a chest with Father Jask's gear, and also the keys to his manacles. No one should be locked up like this. We take all the gear and head back to camp. While talking with our fellow castaways, we all agree to help setup camp, except Gelik. While all should be free to follow their own way, this gnome's attitude is beginning to grate on me. If he doesn't shape up and help out, he might not get any of our food. Aerys, Sasha and Ishirou volunteer to help setup camp and have camp duties. Sasha says she can guard the camp or hunt for food, Ishirou can guard or set traps and fortify the camp, Aerys volunteers to help with moral or guard. Both Jasper and Jaqen make very snide remarks about that. I will have to keep an eye on them. They do not seem to have any respect for the women in our band. We ask Sasha and Ishirou to guard the camp, and Aerys will be able to read poetry and and help keep our spirits up. It takes almost six hours to setup camp, including the tent that I have which I let Aerys and Sasha use. During the afternoon hours, we all relax under the shelter as best we can since it is too hot to do anything. Sasha comes down with a slight fever, but it passes. Before the rains come, I asked if anyone else had tracking training, and Sasha says she does. We go up and down the beach to see if we can find any other tracks, especially those of perhaps the Captain and Ieana. Other PCs, you don't know this:
While we are looking for tracks, the back of her shirt slips a bit and I see a mark on her back, that is of the Red Mantis Assassin Society. I will not tell the others of this. One is as one does, and Sasha has been good to us, so there is no need to complicate things The rains came. Typical for the tropics, a shower every afternoon. We make supper from the lobster from the ship. Between what we each have and the three smaller lobsters, we have about 74 days worth of rations. Divided by ten of us that is only a weeks worth. Sasha and I will have to do hunting to keep us in food. Guard duty is shared through the night. 1st watch Jaqen and Aerys, 2nd Crusher and Ishirou, 3rd Traine and Sasha. During my sleep time, I had a vivid nightmare: I am back on board the Jenivere, bent over the railing being seasick. After my latest bout of retching, I slump back and see the rest of the passengers and crew are on deck as well, all of them sick save for the captain and the quiet Varisian scholar Ieana. She whispers in the captain’s ear, then gives him a kiss on the cheek. At that point the captain holds up a wooden soup spoon, and I realize that you’re holding one as well. Everyone has a spoon. The ship is sinking, and the only way to stop it is to bail out the hold with my spoon! I worked feverishly, but the waters keep rushing in. Just before I woke, I can see monstrous things with pincers in the water trying to claw their way into the ship... Finally morning comes.
February 7th, Traine description and background. Description Traine is a young human male. He is very muscular, and at 6 feet tall stands over most of the folks he meets. He is wearing a chain shirt, barely visible under his explorer's outfit that is colored in browns and greens. He has a well made falchion on his hip, and a longbow strung over his shoulder. That along with his pack and pouches, makes him look like a man who is ready for anything. However, his open friendly smile belays the somberness of his clothing. Biography The Journal of Traine, started whilst on board the ship Jenivere, sailing to Eleder, at the suggestion of my last master. Greetings to any reading this journal. I am Traine, a Ranger in the service of Gozreh. Originally I am from Longpoint, a village along the western coast line of the Aspo Bay in Andorian, and was known as Traine dan Torcan (Traine son of Torc). If you find this journal, it means that I am dead. Please try and return it to my father. My story begins in my 16th year, and as normal for our village I began training in the ways of hunting the accursed Saughin that raided our small village during the summer season. I have been blessed by Gozreh and became quite good at tracking, finding, approaching stealthy, and finally killing these beasts that hunted our village. By my 18th birthday, I was in charge of a patrol that scoured the shoreline for them, and my father asked me to take my younger brother Carl, who had just turned 16, with me and teach him our ways. This I refused for two reasons, brothers should not train brothers, it just doesn't work, and more importantly, Carl was not suited for the woods. He had learned to sing and play the flute. He even had learned a magic trick or two, so he should have spent his time performing in the taverns or gone on to the big city and worked there and I told da as much. Well, da was not to be denied, and Carl was sent out with another patrol, and only the leader and 1 other man returned. Eight of our young men died, including Carl. Myself and two other patrols were dispatched and we caught up with the Saughin group and destroyed them, but never recovered all the bodies including Carl's. My da never forgave me and turned me out so I left to explore the world. Since then, I have traveled to many lands, including the great city of Absalom, which led me to understand that I don't like cities, Osirion, where I learned to use the falchion quite well, to the Mwangi Expanse, where I have finished my apprenticeship for being a guide, and am now on my way to Eleder in Sargava, where I understand that a group of Pathfinders wish to explore the Expanse and perhaps I can hire out as a guide.
