High in the Mindspun Mountains, between the countries of Nidal and Nirmathas, there is a fabled monastery. Mostly unknown to the outside world, only the worthy are chosen to be trained to represent Kelinahat, She of the Ebon Wings. For centuries the Milites Tenebris (aka the Night Knights) have trained to be the finest legion of spies and intelligence agents. Few believe that the Night Knights even exist, considering them only rumors, perhaps of a now extinct cult. But they are quite real, often working in anonymity to aid the deities of good and their followers. Their primary function is to gather and pass along information to where it will do the most good. But if necessary, they are also entrusted to strike down those evils that are a significant threat that no one else is attending to. In particular, they directly oppose cults of Norgorber where-ever they are found.
So it was with some surprise that Brother Kariel found an infant dropped off on the doorstep of the monastery. Not just any infant, one of the kayal, a fetchling. Unsure of what to do with the child, Kariel brought him to the Abbot, a man simply known as the Abbot of Night. The Abbot performed a divination ceremony and pronounced that the child was blessed by She of the Ebon Wings and would be raised among them. He named the child Tomas. Kariel was tasked with being the boy's adoptive father.
Tomas progressed quickly at the monastery. He grew to become one of the finest dark warriors ever trained. As he approached the age of flight (24), Kariel, now the Abbot of Night, did his best to prepare Tomas for his future. Unlike many of the followers who would be sent on specific missions, Tomas' destiny was always murky, hidden even from the priests of Kelihanat. But it was known that great things were in store for him. With the backing of the whole monastery, Tomas left to find and fulfill his destiny.
