Thorin of the Tharnhammer clan, born and raised in Summermount, is a stoic and studious dwarf. His beard is thick and full showing the grey the past one hundred fifty summer inflicted on his thick bronze curls. Thorin keeps his clothes and hair immaculately cleaned and pressed. As a scholar at Simmermount's academy of higher learning Thorin sees himself as a cultural bridge to show these young humans the importance of the history of our ancestors. Instead he watches the humans throw their lives away on petty adventures learning nothing from their past. He watches as family members turn and betray one another for fleeting power, wealth, and land.
Thorin's father referred to his son as the "ceremonial hammer of the Tharnhammer family." Thorin had only average skill at the forge and the way of the warrior his father traveled. When Thorin came of age his father pushed Thorin to apprentice under a family wizard knowing of his son's great intelligence he hoped great things. Unfortunately Thorin had no talent in the art, and no studying could overcome a lack of natural gift. The apprenticeship did afford Thorin one thing, a vast library and much free time. Thorin poured over any tome he could find. Tomes on the arcane, dwarven history, the great darklands. He was especially interested in the study of the great structures of dwarven history. When Thorin eventually left his apprenticeship he found work quite easily as a professor or architecture and history in Summermount's academy. Thorin liked the job well and it afforded him an ever larger library to study in.
Thorin'a life changed when he found a map of the darklands that supposedly lead to a sealed gate to Dammerhall. After some research into its validity, Thorin took a large sum of his inheritance and hired an expedition team to enter the darklands and find this gate. He could not resist a chance to see such an architectural achievement. His team ready, he took a sabbatical, gathered his team, and they entered the tunnels. Only a few days in, the team found their pathway blocked by fallen rocks. One of the sell swords tried to dig the path out causing a cave in. The expedition spent the rest of their time digging their way back to the surface in complete failure. Thorin kept the map, his dream of seeing those great ruins unforgotten.
Thorin took the funds he had left after the failed expedition and traded the coins as well as a price of his pride to apprentice as a full grown adult under a human alchemist nearly half his age. Thorin knew that the ability to craft an alchemist's explosive devices would mean an easier way to travel the caves of the darklands. Thorin's above average intelligence and taste of alchemy from his first apprenticeship made him a natural at the craft. He followed faithfully in his masters craft, but he could not bring himself to use the mutagens his master loved so much. Thorin prided himself on his intelligence and could not suffer the thought of trading it for brawn or grace, even temporarily. Thorin instead tried to reverse his master's mutagen, one that could increase his intelligence rather than hamper it. It took him many years, but upon completing his first successful cognagen, Thorin felt his apprenticeship complete. He now spends his days teaching at the academy and crafting alchemical tools and potions in his free time. He studiously cares for each coin, dreaming of the day he can afford another expedition into the darklands to see Dammerhall.
