Appearance:
Thanaton bears the pointed ears and white hair of a drow, but the whip-like tail beginning at the base of his spine and terminating in a scorpion-like stinger, the empty pits in place of his eyes, the horn nubs just above his brows, his hooves, and the vestigial bat wings sprouting from his back leave little doubt as to his fiendish heritage. His skin is an ashy gray, his movements are quick and jerky, and he carries a tarnished silver amulet of a skull with coins over the eyes around his neck at all times. In formal occasions, he dresses in a lengthy red mantle with a high collar, while the rest of the time he wears dark-colored robes. He is unusually tall and gaunt, giving him a skeletal appearance. He carries his bonded item with him at all times, a lengthy staff carved from a plesiosaurus clavicle, and his spellbook is an entirely black tome - cover, pages, and all - with the words written in faintly glowing white ink.

Personality:
Thanaton speaks in a flat monotone and emphasizes words seemingly at random, giving his voice an eerie quality. He devoutly worships Charon, an obscure god of death, with a particular focus on the creation and usage of undead. His ultimate goal is to unite the Darklands under his banner, and he hopes to discover the secrets of lichdom so his reign can stretch forever, but he approaches his goals in an intelligent, level-headed manner, and he works well with a team. He views the maintenance of society as the primary prerogative, and he pursues his necromantic research with zeal. Those who stand in his way are targets of his unflinching malice, and he shows no mercy to those who work directly against him, but he is generally polite and decent to those who are aiding his plans or could concievably aid his plans (that is, almost all who do not work directly against him). He has a long-held but secret desire to see the surface once before he dies.

Backstory:
Letter from Irsholme Quiasch, Master Summoner, to Alruc Xudrei, Master Reanimator:
Xudrei,

As I mentioned to you in our talk yesterday, I may have a new apprentice for your studies. However, the circumstances through which I met this strange boy are unusual, to say the least, so I thought I had best describe them to you, that you might make your own decision as to whether or not to take him in. The child has talent, but it may be wiser to dispose of him rather than train him.

One week ago, I went to visit Faedri Sirov, a former apprentice of mine who left our guild to join the Azure Cathedral. Her specialty was binding fiends, so it shouldn't have come as a surprise that her son turned out different. Horns, tail, the like, similar to Guildmistress Seoni. He says his name is Thanaton. I'm not sure who or what his father was, but I sincerely doubt any alive can say for sure, for reasons that will be made clear shortly. I saw him occasionally whenever I called on her, but I hadn't thought anything of his presence.

The next part of the tale is somewhat jumbled, as my only source is the boy himself, who told me the story in disjointed fragments. Apparently, he took to his arcane studies quite easily, with a particular talent in necromancy, your department. That imbecile Faedri was furious that he wasn't as skilled in summoning, her field, so she beat him whenever he made a mistake in his conjuration work. The night before I visited the Sirov house, he apparently decided he'd had enough - when I entered, I found Faedri dead and the boy trying a basic reanimation formula on her severed hand.

Quite frankly, I can't say Faedri will be missed. She was a clumsy student and an incompetent mage, and the other journeymen are likely better off without her amateurish meddling to set a bad example. Her death didn't disrupt the district's trade, and she wasn't a noble, so I doubt the watch will take much notice. Young Thanaton's work was fundamentally flawed, of course, but it was also original and incredibly advanced, and I believe that with the proper training, he could be an extraordinarily skilled necromancer. However, he is also very ambitious, and I fear that training him will have horrible repercussions for all of us, should he decide we stand in his way...

As I said, the choice is ultimately yours whether you accept him as an apprentice or not, but I urge you to be aware of the dangers.

- Quiasch

Entry from the Journal of Thanaton Sirov:
Work proceeds apace at the Vanderboren excavation. A new chamber was recently breached at the dig site, packed with strange devices of alien metal. The inscriptions speak of a being without body or substance, a supernatural hunter who consumes the souls of its prey. It would appear that this civilization fell victim to something called the Empty Death - likely a plague of some sort, though the relevant carvings are rather badly corroded. On a fragment of an old ritual vessel, reference was made to some sort of faceless spirits; "those who have no eyes with which to weep, no mouth with which to clench their teeth, no voice with which to cry suffering and lament their fate." However, I saw nothing to indicate that such spirits currently reside in the site, which makes me suspect that these reports may have simply been hallucinations compounded by superstition.

I suppose I shouldn't worry too much about my necromantic calculations. Lord Verek and Lady Larissa have largely been trustworthy employers, and I'm fortunate that so many of Telderist's neighbors draw from Aklo for their religious rites. The Vanderborens pay well enough, quite a bit more than an interpreter would generally make, but it sometimes seems like they look down on the commoners in their employ. Still, their respect is less vital than their funding - it's not as if I'm going to get much work as a reanimator until I finalize my formulae. However, one of the historians mentioned that several of his colleagues in the House of the Dragon are looking for a necromancy specialist for some experiments with lazurite. It pays less than the Vanderborens do, but it would help me finish my work, and it's certainly a job worthy of a guildsman.

Secrets:
Thanaton is in a relationship with Everi Alzeth, a half-drow locksmith affiliated with the respective guild. He has nicknamed her "Veri," and she calls him "Thann." The two met when they were both apprentices - both had been captured by young drow street thugs who tried to kill them, but Thanaton saved Everi in an act of kindness surprising for Telderist.

Thanaton once had a younger sister named Moris, another tiefling like him, but from a different father (she was devil-spawn - Faedri was theoretically a demon binder, but she kept missing), who he dearly loved to play with as a child. However, Faedri Sirov only had use for one child, and she viewed Thanaton's games with Moris as a distraction to his work, so she murdered her own daughter and forced Thanaton to watch. That night, the distraught Thanaton committed matricide, driven by his sister's gruesome death rather than his mother's cruelty towards him.
