Tavos Alvaren was born in a border village repeatedly razed in the endless tug-of-war between crusaders and demonic incursions. As a child, he survived a massacre by hiding in the crypt beneath a ruined chapel. There, half-dead, he claims he “heard the voices of those too stubborn to pass on.” Since then, Tavos has walked with spirits... sometimes companions, sometimes burdens.

The mask he wears is a relic from that crypt: once the faceplate of a fallen crusader-saint. The forehead gem is not ornamental, but a prison-stone said to contain the final will of that saint, who whispers relentlessly in Tavos’ mind. Whether the saint chose Tavos or simply latched onto him is unclear.

Now a man grown, Tavos fights not out of zeal, but because the spirits won’t let him walk away. They insist his fate is bound to the Abyssal War. To Tavos, crusading is less about heroism and more about completion of an unfinished sentence, a compulsion that drives him forward by the voice of the spirits that found him
