BACKSTORY
===============
"THEYBEINGS AND GENTLE-TIES!" booms the Ringmaster. His voice drops to a conspiratorial purr, drawing out the description with theatrical sweeps of his arm. "Our next act comes to you from the jungles of darkest Mwangi! Discovered in a perfectly natural state! Raised by beasts! He hunted with them! Fought them! RULED them! Emerging from the savage with his pride, he now performs amazing feats for your entertainment! Please welcome the Lord of the Jungle, the King of the Carnivores, the Pontifex of the Pride, TARK KHAN!"
Roars split the air, followed by the crack of a whip. The lights reveal a gray-skinned man clad... kind of... in animal skins, his white hair in a mohawk, his eyes a flashing electric blue that glow softly in the dark. All around him are predatory cats, mankillers from the looks of them, their teeth bared and thunder rumbling in their throats. At the man's side, never far, is a smilodon cub. This beast seems to know his mind before he does.
The wild man commands the beasts with the crack of a whip, compelling them to displays of strength and agility. He seems to have no concern for his own well-being, gleefully putting his head into the mouths of lions and wrestling with the cats on the ground. The wild man apparently speaks no civilized tongue, talking only to his beasts as their king.
...it's an act. Mostly.
Tarquin el-Asai can speak civilized languages. Sure, his Taldane has a weird accent to it, but it's hardly noticeable unless he's been drinking. And some of it is close to the truth. How much? That's hard to tell.
When Mistress Dusklight found him, she encouraged his wild man persona. The crowds loved it. So even after he joined the mutiny, he kept it up. Keeps him and his precious cats fed, and for that it's valuable.
On the subject of the mutiny, Tarquin joined to save those cats. Especially the little smilodon, who he called Thorn and sometimes refers to as his nephew. Now, he stays with the circus as the resident lion tamer, but the truth is, they aren't that tame.
