Backstory:

When Luca, head of the Gaborza family of the Sczarni Brotherhood, heard that his granddaughter Lucia had given birth to a half-elf child he hit the roof. He yelled that he would kill the little bastard himself and banish Lucia from the family forever. Fortunately for the young mother and her child some of the other senior members of the family were able to keep Luca occupied until his temper cooled a bit. Luca had a reputation for being a loose axe head at the best of times and his fits of temper usually didn't last that long. The "muscle" that served as Luca's personal bodyguard had learned long ago that immediately obeying Luca's original commands yelled at the top of his lungs was not always in their best interest. Luca had been known to blame the guards for carrying out those commands after he had cooled down a bit and either rescinded the command or denied that he had ever given it in the first place.

That being said and understood, Luca was still not a happy camper even after his fit of temper had passed. He stated that as the father of the child was not there to name the child that he, acting as head of the family, would name the child. The child would be named "Tarnish" for what his mere existence did to the "honor" of the Gaborza family. Furthermore the child would never bear the family name of Gaborza. He would always be known simply as "Tarnish". Though that edict was modified after Luca eventually passed away and Carlos, the new head of the family, pronounced that Tarnish could call himself a Gaborza as the blood tie was undeniable. Also, the only person who knew what Tarnish's father's name was never told anybody.

Given all that it should be no surprise that Tarnish did not have an incredibly happy childhood. But the Gaborza family of the Sczarni Brotherhood were not total monsters by any stretch of the imagination. They understood what it meant to be family. They knew that an ability to pick one's blood relatives was something that mere mortals didn't have. Thus it was that Tarnish did have a childhood. And if some of his relatives despised him, and others barely tolerated him, well wouldn't that be true of most people to a certain extent in any family? And then there were those relatives who liked him and the few who loved him.

As time went on and the child became a boy who became a man he was trained as a member of the Sczarni Brotherhood. Given his size and his strength his initial training emphasized fighting and combat skills. But he was also a very intelligent and perceptive person who had proven his value as a lookout on several occasions. He demonstrated an excellent grasp of Thieves' Cant as well. Thus he was also provided with training as a rogue in addition to training as a fighter. He served the Gaborza family reasonably well, and if he wasn't always as bloody minded as some of them, that wasn't necessarily a bad thing was it? Everybody had their own strengths and weaknesses, and there were several niches that Tarnish could occupy quite well in the family "business".

However, a significant percentage of that family "business" revolved around the transport of various items of "merchandise" into and out of Korvosa. Through time an organization that had ties to Korvosa's devil worshiping leaders started muscling in on the family business. Carlos called a council of war to plan how to deal with this problem. Everybody who was anybody in the Gaborza family business was for a brief period of time staying at the same estate. No effort was spared to ensure that the security at the estate was top notch. So it was not too surprising that Tarnish found himself playing a role, even if a relatively minor one, in providing that security. Late one night when Tarnish was off watch and trying to get some sleep he smelled smoke. The mansion was on fire and walls of flame were racing through the building!

Tarnish was just barely able to get out of the building with his life. As he did he saw the dead bodies of several of the perimeter guards. Moving as stealthily as he could he made his way away from the smoldering ruin that the mansion had become. At one point he overheard a conversation that was being conducted in a variation of Thieves' Cant based on the Infernal language. The instructor who had trained Tarnish in the "Use Magic Device" skill had suggested that Tarnish learn Infernal because a lot of the magic items coming out of Cheliax these days were triggered by command words in Infernal. The conversation that Tarnish overheard went something like this:

Voice 1: "That's it. They were all in the building and we got them all."

Voice 2: "Are you sure of that? Because if there are any screw ups in this the boss will be very unhappy."

Voice 1: "Look, those grimoires that devil provided were most helpful. After we took out the perimeter guard I was able to put everybody in the building to sleep. That way when the fireballs went off nobody would be able to get out."

Voice 2: "Are you sure of that?"

Voice 1: "Yep, the increase in the radius of effect of the sleep spell was enough to get everybody in the building."

Voice 2: "Even the half-elf?"

Voice 1: "Half-elf? What half-elf? They were a Sczarni Brotherhood family. All humans there."

Voice 2: "With one half-elf who provided some of their lower level muscle."

Voice 1: "Well, we didn't see anybody come out."

Voice 2: "You might not have. They see a hell of a lot better in the dark than you and the boys do."

Voice 1: "Short of paying a Necromancer an exorbitant amount of money to examine and interrogate all the corpses in there I don't think we're going to be able to say for sure whether his body is in there or not."

Voice 2: "Then we better play it safe and say we missed one. The boss will be more tolerant of us appearing to make a mistake based on being overcautious than on being too sloppy."

Voice 1: "Right, I'll put the word out."

After hearing that conversation Tarnish played things as carefully and quietly as he could. He was able to make it to a secret location where some gear and money had been set aside for emergencies. Knowing that the rival organization was going to be looking for a half-elf and likely assuming that the half-elf was a rogue, Tarnish chose to emphasize armor and gear that stressed his training as a fighter. After having suitably equipped himself Tarnish made his way away from Korvosa. He knew he needed to lay low for several years in order for the rival organization to assume that he was dead, and also to allow time for himself to increase his level of training and skills in order to take them on. Not to mention getting the money that he would need to pursue such an endeavor.

Tarnish spent several weeks constantly on the move. Then he heard about the Swallowtail festival in Sandpoint and decided to go there and check it out. It was far enough away from Korvosa that he shouldn't have to worry too much about the other organization. Also, with a large number of people showing up from all over he shouldn't stand out that much as a newcomer. Last but not least it would give him an opportunity to make new contacts. Hopefully he could get on with a decent adventuring company.

The Gaborza family most definitely had their flaws, and Tarnish did have some legitimate gripes about how he had been treated. But they were still his family. Somebody was going to have to pay for this. There was only one question that needed to be answered as Tarnish plotted his revenge. Where was he going to be able to get decent rigatoni al dente with marinara sauce?

Physical Description:

Tarnish is 21 years old. He stands 6 feet 6 inches tall and weighs in at 190 pounds. He has dark hair, brown eyes and deep olive skin. He wears his scale mail armor over his explorer's outfit.

Tarnish has his longsword slung over his right shoulder with the hilt sticking up at an angle to the right about even with his head. He wears the Halfling sling staff and a belt pouch with 10 sling bullets in it on his right hand side, with the bullets behind the staff. Most people might not realize that the sling staff is anything more than just a club the way that Tarnish normally carries it. Tarnish wears his warhammer on his left hand side set up for a crossdraw. He wears the shortsword in the center front of his weapon belt rigged more or less horizontally and set up for a right hand draw. He carries the chakrams in a special case on his left shoulder set up such that he can pull them out one at a time. Last but not least he carries the obligatory dagger hidden in each boot.

Notes on tactics:

Tarnish likes the Halfling Sling Staff because a lot of the people who see it on his belt don't realize what they're looking at. They think it's just a club. Depending on where one is and what one is doing carrying a bow or a crossbow might attract too much unwanted attention. But a guy who just has a "club" wouldn't get looked at twice. Also, the sling staff will automatically increase the amount of damage that it puts out whenever Tarnish gets a strength buff of some kind.

When Tarnish is expecting trouble but there is no enemy in sight he will have the sling staff loaded and ready to go. When he gets the chance he will take a shot at an enemy and then transition to a melee weapon. Tarnish prefers to use his longsword, but there are some things out there that need to be bludgeoned so Tarnish also has a warhammer. The shortsword is an obvious backup weapon, and the two hidden daggers are there in hopes they won't be found if Tarnish is ever captured. If Tarnish is holding a lantern to see with then instead of having the sling staff as his ready weapon he will have a chakram as his ready weapon.
