When I was 7 years old, I was attacked and killed by a wolf. My parents didn't like that, and having some measure of means and status in the community, paid for my revival. Which was successful - in a manner of speaking. I am alive to this day, at least.

It also left me very sensitive to death. I eventually found that I could nearly mimic being an undead creature - at least as far as how I reacted to healing magic.

But worse, it turns out that it wasn't a wolf that attacked me. It was a werewolf. Fortunately, at the next full moon, I was inside my own room and didn't manage to escape it. I certainly trashed the place that night though.

For a few years, my family tried to keep my condition secret. With limited success. And always, I was kept entire days and nights anywhere near the full moon confined in a sturdy prison cage. Even after I learned how to keep my sanity and sense of self while under the effects of the transformation. I shudder to think how I would have been treated if they knew that I learned to transform voluntarily even when the moon is not full.

Eventually I decided it would be best if I left. Their social standing in the community had never recovered while having a monster living in their home. I am certainly better off living on my own. Living as I am rather than trying to pretend to be something that I am not. I didn't ask their permission. Or tell them when I left. Or where I was going. I am not certain that they are even still living there. I half expect that they have moved elsewhere to get a fresh start without the stench of a werewolf hanging over them.

I have met many people over the years - some accepting, and many more who are not - and had more than a few adventures. I have picked up the art of spellcasting. And I can now even fully mimic an undead for short periods of time if I really feel the desire to. That trick has gained me some ... interesting ... friends.
