About Talla ZalimarDescription:
Ahead you see a lithe Varisian woman dancing by a fruit stand, spinning a curved sword in entrancing patterns. She wears a sari of layered silks in red, silver, and black which float around her as she spins. A striking red bandanna covers her head while lustrous auburn curls spill out past her shoulders, sparkling golden in the sunlight. Her skin is the typical deep hue of Varisians, but it's easy to pick out something more, as her skin glistens with otherworldly beauty. Her face is long and her expression soft. The only thing marring the sight of her is the patch covering her right eye, though it seems to enhance her mystery rather than dull her beauty. When her good eye opens, you notice a hazy silver flash and a sharp pupil-- it almost reminds you of a cat, though it could just be your imagination... * Bones are made of black diamond (only visible if injured).
Goals:
2- Talla is convinced that her inability to play the viola is due to a curse from the fates. She wishes to find a famous musician who can teach her to play in spite of their wishes to keep her from doing so. She actually originally came to Absolom seeking the rumors of such a man... People:
2- Szatha and Ardin Zalimar -- Talla's parents. They were both wandering Varisian musicians who met by chance. Her mother, Szatha, grew up around Korvosa; while her father was raised near Magnimar like Talla. They met during a Gnomish festival in Whistledown. Szatha is an Aasimar herself, so Talla's birth was no surprise. 3- Alexander van Derken -- a powerful member of the Lumber Consortium. He oversees the areas bordering the Arthfell Forest and has been a strong advocate for deploying military forces against the "terrorists" that defend the forest. Talla flamed his ire during her year in Andoran by protesting and inciting the people against the Lumber Consortium. His attentions were part of the reason she left for Absolom. 4- Caadle Zrannen -- A Varisian boy only a few years older than Talla, she worked with him a few times during her stint with the Sczarni. They weren't close, but knew each other well enough. Caadle always seemed a bit obsessed with Talla, though. In recent years he's ascended the ranks in the Sczarni and now heads his own family with multiple crews under his supervision. Secrets:
2- What Talla doesn't know is that Caadle (above) has become an important player in the Sczarni-- and though she hasn't thought of him in years, he never forgot about her. He's been searching for her since he gained the resources. He's only become meaner and more ruthless over the years, and he intends to make Talla his-- even if she doesn't want to (she'll come around >=} or so he thinks). History:
"How, you ask?" She taps the patch over her eye a pensive look crosses her face. "It's not a happy story, but it's one I've told many times before... and I don't mind telling it again." She pauses for a bite of fish, savoring the flavor before washing it down with a swig of white wine. "I lost this eye beneath the wasted city of Kelorav, on the Isle of Kortos..." Talla Zalimar grew up among a large Varisian family who spent most of the year outside of Magnimar. She was always a curious child; and grew up dabbling in dance, song, and storytelling. A self-appointed protector of her people, Talla also learned a blend of exotic swordplay and the arcane arts. When she came of age, Talla was sent out into the world on a journey of self-discovery, as is customary among her people. She wandered south, pointedly avoiding the autocratic nation of Cheliax, eventually finding her way to Absolom via Andoren. She arrived in Absolom after a year in Andoren campaigning against corrupt bureaucrats and defending the woodland fey. A born nurturer, Talla cared as best she could for the poor and downtrodden of the city. Eventually, her mission took her to the rotten city of Kelorav. She was a capable soul, able to defend herself from the unsavory characters she encountered while trying to better the lives of mistreated souls around her. After weeks in Kelorav, Talla was exploring an old cave system on the outskirts of town. She had always been drawn towards the mysteries of the deep earth, and this particular cave was filled with massive crystal structures of all shapes and colors. It was fascinating. After three hours of exploration, a mysterious blue light began to emanate from the deeper in the cave. Talla moved towards it, but it was quickly obvious this light was not a good sign. The rock around her began to shake, large pieces of stone falling all around her. She rushed back towards the exit, but she never had a chance. Collapsing crystals blocked her exit and buried her beneath a cascade of diamonds. Miraculously, Talla awoke later, somehow alive if not well. Her body ached in places she didn't know she had, and she could see almost nothing around her, though Talla knew she was still buried in the cavern. Assessing her situation, Talla realized her left arm was broken, the bones piercing her skin. She seemed to have a large piece of black crystal lodged within, but she dared not remove it. Her right eye was also injured enough that should couldn't see with it. Somehow able to move despite being covered in stones, Talla slowly crawled her way towards the surface, unsure if she would live or die. As she moved, she began to hear voices, though she couldn't be sure if they were real or simply hallucinations. "This way," they urged her, "Keep going... you're almost there..." Some of the voices pushed her forward, others pleaded for her help, still others told her stories of ages long past. Despite her condition, Talla somehow pushed through the collapsed cave towards the surface, finding her way more by feeling than by sight. As she neared the entrance to the caverns, one voice sounded over all the others-- a deep gravelly baritone voice ringing clearly in her head, speaking a language Talla did not know yet somehow understood... "I've been waiting for one such as you," it said. "A long, long time I've waited..." Too confused to answer, Talla simply wondered as the voice continued.
Talla awoke confused once again. Looking around, she seemed to be in a small bedroom. She tried to sit up, but cried out in pain as she did, falling back onto the bed. A few moments later, a kindly old man knocked and entered. "Hello," he said warmly as a grin split his face. "You're lucky to be alive you know." The man explained that he was a devotee of Nethys visiting the house of Shelyn, and found Talla behind the temple just under a pile of rubble. Orren, as he called himself, took her into his quarters and nursed her back to health during the past few weeks. Truly, it was a miracle that she was alive at all. Orren was saddened to say, however, that her eye was badly damaged and couldn't be saved. Her sight would very likely never return to normal. He did note a small glinting when stitching her eye, though it was too deep to safely remove. Talla thanked him profusely, assisting him with temple chores after she was recovered enough to walk a few days later. During her week of service, she learned of the recent rumors from Orren and the other priests. The same blue light she had seen in the cavern had penetrated to the surface to engulf the city, creating all sorts of stories of supernatural behavior and sudden powers amongst the populace. Thanking Orren and the others one last time, Talla took her leave and returned to her own apartment of the previous month. To that point, the priest's predictions had held true and her damaged eyes could make out nothing past a few building lengths. Talla was saddened, but simply glad to be alive. It was only a day later that Talla saw one of these occurrences firsthand. A bestial man attacked her from above in an alleyway. She tried to fight him off, but he knocked her to the ground, rending her arms and face. Finding an opening, she thrust her palm into his chest, causing him to shriek and fly off. Talla examined her wounds, seeing dark crystal under her skin where bones should have been. As well, her palm had split open and produced a short spike of this same crystal. The dark blood on the end proved it had driven off her attacker. Talla made her way back to her apartment in a daze. Unsure what to make of this, she went to her mirror and began unwrapping the latest bandages around her midsection. She noticed a new scar that hadn't been there before: a blazing golden flame on her left side. As she wondered what the cause was and what it meant, a deep voice filled the room...
