Does a Tanuki need to breath while in tea kettle form. As well is the object considered biological?

Recently I ran Quig, the iconic mechanic, at a 7th level table. He has slotted on his drone a spell Ampule of Make Whole. Is this accurate or a mistake? The rules for Spell Ampule state that the spell must target a creature and be 1 minute or less casting time. If it's accurate them my own mechanic should be able to acquire these same spell amps, correct?
