== Background ==
Born as Yuliya Melnyk, granddaughter of Russian refugees from the Euro Wars, most of Sybil's life was marked by the neurodegenerative disease she was diagnosed with at 7. A rare form of palsy of the motor cortex, before its progress could be stopped it had robbed her of the use of legs and severely weakened her arms. The doctors looked into cyberware and bioware, but that sort of damage was not easily repaired. She would be wheelchair-bound until a new leap in neuroengineering allowed to repair damaged cortical gyri.
The Matrix offered her relief from her body condition. There, in a virtual avatar, she could be whole, she could feel. Jacking in became a second nature to her, and her mind stepped in to fill the gap left by her ailing body. In ten years' time she had learned all she could by herself.
But what she could learn by herself still did not feel like it was enough. Therefore, she won her way into an MIT&T scholarship and enrolled into Computer Science, minoring in Biomedical Engineering. Those were stimulating years. She changed her wheelchair for a Transys Steed drone, controlled via DNI, and dumped most of her living fund into the best deck she could buy. She didn't need food for anything other than staying alive, after all, and spending a year on nutrisoy was a fair trade for those specs.
You can't expect a CS college student not to fall into alternative collectives advocating freedom of information and a different Matrix: for Sybil, these were the Apollineans. JackPoint hopefuls and busybodies looking into the Foundation made up this anarchist collective which drew on Greek myths for symbology, they were drawing plans for Matrix-only hot-sim joints to provide an experience akin to BTL but milder, as well as a public global "phantom" grid. Mostly empty theories, but when Sybil was 25 they came up with an actual, if simpler, plan. Their objective, the cancellation of the overwhelming student debt that forced 95% of graduates into a life as wageslaves.
The plan was theoretically easier: break in, make a loud distraction to summon spiders and IC on the group stronger in Brute Force, and let the sleazers to parallel-run Nuke From Orbit on the student debt records. The details about how it went wrong are fuzzy, mostly lost amidst petabyte-level data spikes, but those who survived the biofeedback found themselves marked with a staggering list of charges.
Luckily, some had underground contacts. With no other way to clear her name other than a short life in a prison camp, Sybil took to the shadows. She moved to Seattle, trusting distance to keep her anonymous, and took on the odd jobs as a data hound: remote assistance for shadowrunners, background checks, the occasional sabotage or spyware installation. But charges were ramping up, and being more active in shadowruns pays well than being a contractor...
