Beady little red eyes gleaming with mischief, follow your every move as if awaiting the moment you turn your back to him. A pair of thick leather gloves with long spikes running along the back cover his small grasping hands but leave his long thin fingers exposed. a dark dull grey coat hugs his form tightly, seemingly adopting a shadowy hue of the surrounding colour. You know you probably should have shot it before it spotted you.
Truth however might be stranger then fiction. What you just took for a menacing glare, might actually have been an awkward attempt at affection or a ready stance awaiting command. During his time with the stone-fist monks, Swiftstab learned the importance of friendship and trust. Having someone you can count on greatly heightens the chances of survival. Oh he might still play the occasional prank on you, but he now saves the dangerous and hurtful ones for your enemies. Just remember, he is rather clumsy at social behaviour. What you perceived as a deadly threat, might actually be a concerned advice. Or the other way around. Three things that make Swiftstab happy:
Two things that make Swiftstab angry:
One thing that makes Swiftstab scared:
Background:
Before he came to Pandora in a cryo-chamber on board of a big metal bird, Swiftstab used to be a Stone-fist of the Sacred Pointy Mount. An honorable brotherhood of protectors of the goblin-clans under the mountains' shadow. However, no-one is born a stone-fist. Stone-fist apprentices are hand-picked by the great Granite, chief of the Pointy Mount Monastery. And being picked is a great honor that a few hope for all their short little lives and many more dread and fear, as it is a harsh and heavy training that not all even survive.
Swiftstab comes from the jungles, born of the Pointystone clan. As far as they were concerned, the world existed only of the jungle they lived in, the Pointy Mount that overlooked it and the heavens full of twinkling lights when its black and a bright ball of fire when its blue. To the outside universe however, it is seen as a backwater planet known only as DL-213. To the Lords up high it has only value as a source for “wild game”. Swiftstab was a trapper that provided the clan with fresh meat. He was mischievous little bugger, always trying to pull of the things he wasn't allowed to, “just because he can”. A bad habit that many goblins are prone to, but most know better then to give into such tendencies. Mostly out of fear for what happens when they get caught. Swiftstab however does not know better. Mostly because he never got caught. That however changed soon once the great Granite picked him for training. Swiftstab was not the strongest of the clan but he was the most agile and cunning one and the great Granite apparently thought him right for it. In the mountain retreat, he learned to control his impulses. With no jungle foliage to hide in and many observing eyes constantly watching his every move, going unseen was next to impossible. Discipline was drilled in with rigorous training. Unwanted and “childish” behavior was discouraged by ruthless beatings. It was hard, but a great honor just the same. Before long, the chaos in his mind, inherited by all of the goblin blood, started to become tempered by the unmovable peace of the stone. Discipline and reason took root in the jungle of his mind. As he was the clan trapper before being taken up into the ranks of the stone-fist, Swiftstab was charged with stocking the monasteries stores with fresh meat. One unfaithful day down in the jungle, Swiftstab was checking a favored trap spot when he heard some voices from the jungle trail nearby. He stalked closer to see what the commotion was and spotted a group of slavers. They were transporting a cage filled with goblins - Goblins of the Pointystone clan! Swiftstab flipped out and jumped the closest slaver – a hobgoblin in strangely silvery armor. He died instandly as two sharp spikes were burried deep into his skull. Two more he severely wounded before the rest managed to subdue him. He woke up in the center of a dusty town square in a bamboo cage along with more goblins. Closeby stood one with kobolds and over there by the giant silver bird there was a pen with razortusk boars. He knew what was to come next, for once every few months the silver bird set down here to trade slaves for fabrics and arms.
