Solaric’s mother is the Lady Kiana Muralt, the daughter of the late Count Manfray Muralt of Ordranto in the country of Ustalav. Because she was a legitimate heir and a threat to the taking over of county Ordranto, the devious Count Conwrest arranged for her kidnapping, allowing him to freely marry Kiana’s younger sister, Lyrabella, and claim rule by name. Lady Kiana Muralt was captured and taken away to the underdark where she was sold into slavery in the underground Drow city of Jadeberazzan. The Lady Kiana found herself surviving as a servant in the Zekkaran house where the eldest son, Lacertak took an interest in her. She soon became pregnant and eventually gave birth to Solaric. The slave child became a servant to the weaponsmith of House Zekkaran and learned to forge swords and other weapons. However both Solaric and his mother endured great torment and abuse from their masters. Only through the stories and teachings of Iomedae from his mother was Solaric able to find the resilience to be able to survive his brutal plight. Eventually Kiana planned and executed a daring escape from the City of Jadeberazzan with her son. After a long and desperate journey they found their way back to the surface in the county of Sinaria of Ustalav. Solaric has grown up being educated by his mother and being taught the ways of Iomedae. He worked his way through the prestigious Kiavelak Academy in the city of Karcau after vowing to serve Iomedae. His mother still lives in hiding in a small cottage in the hamlet of Hustav on the shores of Lake Prophyria. Solaric and his mother, Kiana, patiently await their time to restore justice. The Rite of the Lighted Sword:
The Rite of The Lighted Sword The ordination of a priest of Iomedae The Rite of The Lighted Sword is the Ordination that "makes" one a priest of Iomedae, provided that the candidate is already a faithful follower of the Inheritor. The church of Iomedae is organized into circles, each consisting of 10 to 50 priests or knights of similar ability, attitude, and rank. The leader of a circle is called a sword knight, and each sword knight is part of a higher-ranked circle reporting to a superior sword knight. The high priest or priestess is called the first sword knight of Iomedae; her circle is the first circle, comprised of 14 second sword knights, each of whom leads a second circle, and so on. The Rite of the Lighted Sword may be performed only by a sword knight of the circle that the candidate is entering. The Rite occurs within the context of a morning worship service in a church or temple of Iomedae. After being called forward and presented to the assembly, the candidate is questioned. He promises to diligently perform the duties of the Iomedaean Priesthood and to respect and obey his sword knight (and all other clergy of superior rank). Then the candidate lies prostrate before the altar, while the assembled faithful kneel and pray for the help of Jingh (This servant of Iomedae is manifested as a wheel of bright white metal, illuminated by holy fire), Saint Lymirin (This former priestess of Iomedae sometimes appears as an eagle-headed winged humanoid, and Peace Through Vigilance (This servant is a young but cheerful and spirited celestial gold dragon.) The essential part of the rite is when the sword knight silently lays her hands upon the candidate (followed by all priests present), before offering the consecratory prayer, addressed to Iomedae, the Inheritor, The Light of The Sword, invoking her power upon the candidate being ordained. After the consecratory prayer, the newly ordained is vested with the stole and chasuble of those belonging to the circle and then the sword knight presents him with a holy symbol (usually made of silver) which the candidate will thereafter use to channel the power of Iomedae. Next, the candidate is presented with a longsword (usually of masterwork quality). The newly ordained then takes the sword in both hands, and holds it out to the altar while kneeling as an offering to Iomedae. As he kneels in position, each of the clerics of the circle approach one at a time and casts a light spell upon the sword, until it shines with a blazing glow that bathes everyone in a glory of light. After the lighting of the sword, the members of the circle form a ring around the newly ordained. The sword knight calls for him to rise and join the circle where he moves into the position of honor at the right hand side of the sword knight. With hands clasped, the circle sings a joyous rendition of Iomedaean Light. At the end of the song, the swords of the entire circle are drawn and raised in honor of Iomedae and the sword knight calls out “For Victory”, which everyone in the circle cries out in a hearty response, “For the Heart”. The Iomedaean cry is repeated two more times, each time followed by the hearty response. At the end of the third cry the circle breaks out into exuberant cheering. This concludes the Rite of The Lighted Sword. This is usually followed by a celebration and a great feast.
