Sol'Quan was born to the Shriikirri-Quah tribe of the Shoanti, under favorable omens of both the stars and avian creatures which share the sky. Son of the tribe's eldest shaman, the boy showed a remarkable talent for reading the spirits even from his youth. His destiny to ascend to the Shriikirri-Quah's shamanistic tradition was undeniable. His youth was spent learning the ways and traditions of all Shoanti – hunting, herbalism, ritualism. The shamanistic ways came naturally to him, even before he was chosen by the spirits. He heard their whisperings, and responded to them in kind. It was not until a spirit materialized before Sol'Quan that anyone suspected there was something different about this child. As the Hawk Clan, all elders before him had bonded to the namesake bird of prey. But the creature that appeared before Sol'Quan was no hawk – it was a strange avian, with a flowing tail and vibrant crimson feathers. Its attempts to share the sky ended in failure, and it was forced to walk among men and beasts. But its weak wings were no hindrance, for its seemingly limitless vitality made it a formidable predator. Sol'Quan knew that this spirit had chosen him – the spirit Rilgar. The years passed, and Sol'Quan grew into his role as a young shaman of the Shoanti. His life was uneventful, though the spirits whispered of an uncertain future. These messages were mysteries, until a Varisian wanderer was found alone, dying, on the wastes of the Storval Plateau. On a hunt with only a few men, Sol'Quan had to tend to the man without the aid of a greater shaman. Despite his years of training and communion with the spirits, the man was beyond his skill to heal. He survived for just over a day, sweating buckets even in the chill of winter. Sol'Quan. As the dawn of the second day approached, the man finally spoke – the Varisian tongue that Sol'Quan had not learned. He offered the shaman a silver key, gripped tightly in his palm for the past day and soaked in the man's sweat. Though he could not understand the few words uttered, one of them mirrored the Shoanti tongue: “Please.” Sol'Quan took the key as the man passed into unconsciousness. He perished less than an hour later, and was given traditional Shoanti rites in burial. The key was nothing special, as far as Sol'Quan could tell, but there was something strange about it. Something that made the spirits uncomfortable. Unknowing. He knew that this own conscience, as well as the Varisian man's spirit, would rest uneasy so long as the key was in his possession. Yet, disposing of it seemed inappropriate. Discussing the matter with his father, who was now well advanced in years, it was decided that Sol'Quan would make the journey of Sharra-Long: venturing forth from the tribe's traditional lands, to create tales worthy of song. Key in hand, and Rilgar riding upon his shoulder, Sol'Quan departed the Storval Plateau, in search of the wider world and an unknown destiny.
Appearance and Personality:
As with most Shoanti, Sol'Quan bears numerous tribal tattoos corresponding to his particular Quah. Among the Shriikirri-Quah, images of birds and spiraling images of the wind and wilds are most common. The most distinctive of Sol'Quan's tattoos is on his back, a large image of a bird of prey. He stands fairly tall, with a bulk common among men of the Shoanti. His head is shaved, as befitting of most adult men. His skin is of a darker complexion, much like his Varisian cousins, though far more scarred and worn from the harsh lands of Storval. Despite his size and relatively intimidating appearance, Sol'Quan tends to be stoic in his actions. He shows a wisdom beyond his years thanks to his training among the shamans, but life on the Plateau left little time for academic pursuit. Though slow to anger, he fights with the fury of the Shoanti; leaving little mercy for merciless enemies, giving quarter for those with honor. Trained in bow and spear, he prefers to avoid a battle, rather than start one. |
