About Sir Tandyn

Description:
Sir Tandyn has the appearance, mannerisms, and resolve of a model crusader. He’s six-foot-tall with an athletic build and sandy-blond hair. He is impeccably clean. He wears a crusader tabard draped over full plate armor. His tabard, shield, and the hilt of his cold iron longsword all bear the shining sword of Iomedae. He carries the legendary sword Radiance alongside his personal one. In between his armor and tabard is an adventurer’s sash which he wears over his left shoulder so that the pouch sits right of his waist where it dutifully holds his silver holy symbol.

Mesmerist Tricks (lvl/2+Cha/day):

Compel Alacrity - The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject begins her turn within an enemy’s reach. The subject can move 10 feet as a free action without provoking attacks of opportunity. The distance the subject can move increases by 5 feet for every 5 levels the mesmerist possesses, to a maximum of 30 feet at 20th level. The subject can’t move farther than her speed in this way. The movement from this trick doesn’t count against the subject’s movement speed for that round.
False Flanker - A duplicate of the mesmerist appears momentarily, as though he were fighting in tandem with the subject. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject moves into or begins her turn in a square where she threatens an enemy. An illusory duplicate of the mesmerist appears in any unoccupied space adjacent to that enemy. This duplicate counts as threatening the enemy for the purposes of determining flanking, but can’t actually make attacks. The duplicate disappears at the end of the turn during which the trick is triggered. This is an illusion (figment) effect, and a creature that interacts with the false flanker can attempt a saving throw to disbelieve the effect.
Meek Façade - The subject magically seems like a weak target, goading an enemy into attacking her. The mesmerist can trigger this trick when the subject misses a creature with an attack (even if it’s part of a full attack in which she hits that creature with another attack). The enemy must attack no one other than the subject, and the subject gains a +2 dodge bonus to AC against the triggering enemy’s attacks. Both of these effects last for 1 round. The bonus to AC increases by 1 for every 5 levels the mesmerist possesses. This is a mind-affecting compulsion effect.

══♜══╣Background╠══♜══

Childhood:
Sir Tandyn was raised by crusaders to be another crusader. He and his friends all had carefully curated childhoods to ensure that one day they would follow in their parents' footsteps. The temple of Iomedae was like a second home, and whenever his parents would leave on rotation, it was. He never really had to wonder who he was and was consistently praised for doing as he was told. It was a happy, regimented childhood.

The Demon:
”More” The well-adorned cleric begins chanting something softly while placing his hands on the wounded child. For a brief moment holy light illuminates every detail of the room. The gashes across the child’s chest seem to fight against the magic as they finally stop bleeding. ”That’s as much as I can do. His fate’s with Iomedae now.” He reflexively reaches for his cleaning rags, but despite the bleeding somehow this child's skin is clean. ”I’ll want to speak with him when he wakes. Has his skin always done that?”

An Agreement:
Armin glances around the marketplace. This is probably the shortest the line will get. He takes a deep breath and walks out and joins the queue. It is an unusual sight to see a middle-aged crusader join a line of children to see the enchantress, but luckily the young woman has everyone’s complete attention with illusions of giant butterflies with wings of red-green and blue-yellow – impossible colors that cannot appear on any painter’s pallet. The line churns and more coppers are exchanged for fanciful and majestic sights – many of them butterflies. Another child runs off her face aglow and it’s Armin’s turn.

”Yes, good morning. I was told you could help my…” He locks eyes with her. Her eyes swirl with the same impossible colors as the butterflies. He becomes calm and lost in them.

She continues for him in a soft voice ”Your son. Tandyn is it? Armin feels a strange and soothing sensation wash over his mind and a new much older voice continues in his head ”I see. Do not worry, I can hear your thoughts, and you can still nod and shake your head. I just need control for a bit to sort a few things out. Oh lucky you… you’ve been so many places I have not… Sedwin the barkeep at Sadlot’s Tavern told you I could help? Noted… noted… Now on to your situation… such trauma for a child… and he still hasn't woken? It's so terrible, but I'm afraid I can only erase the freshest of memories. Perhaps, I can still help him though... you see I control my own feelings through strict training - training stored in memories that I could share with him one minute at a time before he wakes and confronts all this. The training he'll need requires other more basic training... it will take several sessions, but part of who I am will continue in your son and that has a certain appeal beyond a typical apprentice… and it counts as helping someone, how nice! Oh no, don’t worry, he'll just be able to endure his trauma with ease. All of the other techniques will be locked away from his surface thoughts – well, for a week or so at a time really. He’ll need to revisit me to make that work, but that can be programmed and he won't remember a thing. Yes, this really could work. It’s all so clean. All you’ll see is happy young boy who somehow copes with having his chest torn and friends killed who occasionally goes to the market for a pick-me-up.”

”Now, let’s talk payment. We need terms for our deal. Should you refuse, you will remember none of this - not a word. What price for a happy childhood… what price… Well, I would like to walk around Kenabres with my own face. How’s that? You will remove me from the crusader’s records entirely. You will even forget it as soon as it’s done so that it doesn’t weigh on you.” Armin shakes his head. ”Well, there are more long-term advantages to the training to consider… let me share a memory with you…”

Armin finds himself hidden in scraggly briar atop a dark hill looking down at three small demons feasting upon the remains of a few unfortunate travelers. He tries to move but cannot. He feels his lips whisper words he does not know. His withered hands begin making vicious movements. For a moment nothing seems to happen, and then the demons begin eyeing each other and start slashing deeply into each other. His eyes light up and his face forms a satisfied smile. In just seconds of carnage, two fall disemboweled to the ground and just one severely wounded demon remains. He feels himself get up and walk down towards it. The demon begins to come around and starts looking back and foreth frantically. His lips and hands move again, and the demon falls over laughing uncontrollably. He locks eye contact with it, pulls out a dagger, and stabs it in the chest.

Suddenly Armin was back in his body staring into those lovely eyes. He began shaking his head even harder. no no no no…

”Dishonorable? Really crusader? They use it on you lot. Your ambushes were much worse. You lost Erril and Cal that way and think about it every day! What does it matter how the demons die? Enough of this nonsense, let’s agree to agree then…”

Armin nodded with a smile and walked away. What a beautiful butterfly!
