How Gork became a Paladin:

It was a fully normal day.

Gork and his tribe (the Bone'Gnaws) had just pillaged a settlement of those weak pinkys and he was happily bashing their leaders head against the ground. He could already smell the fine taste of bone marrow he would soon suck out of this weaklings thin bones.

Then ... bright, blinding golden light struck him from the sky!

Andthen he heard the voice of GOD for the first time in his life. A voice that would change his life forever....

It was a busy day for Merry the Golden Maid.

Being a good deity, in a realm of selfishness, war and death is by definition hard.

But this day was particularly saddening and troublesome.

One of the few small villages that was revering him, was attacked by a small group of the dumbest but strongest creatures this side of mindless vermin: Ogres.

They just happened to stumble over their village on their fools errant and proceeded to slaughter and eat (!) a decent amount of her already few followers.

She couldn't allow that to proceed any further!

Summoning a decent portion of her divine might, she aimed for the strongest, most faithful remaining soul in the village ... and threw it!

Her target was the village's strongest warrior and currently in a fight for his life with a particularly big brute, maybe the leader of the Ogres.

But as soon as her ray of divine ascension would hit the man, he would find all the powers he would need to change the date of his village and drive off the brutes.

He would have HER power and would do good, raising her population and gift her with more followers soon.

After all, this day may not be as bad as she had thought before. It was the beginning of a better time, that was for sure!

And then ...

The ray of divine ascension hit the Ogre...

The first thing Gork heard from the unearthly beautiful female voice in his head, was an enraged exclamation of surprise - immediately followed by cursing of such profanity that it actually made Gork blush.

While this was strange and new, he didn't though much of it at first.

He just wanted to proceed with bashing in the hummies head and suck out his marrow.

Actually... No. He did not want to do that.

That would be babaric. Evil. Not to mention gross.

Theman did not do anything to him nor to anyone else. He just wanted to life his live.

Like all of these pinkies.

Why did he wanted to kill this man in the first place?

The Bone'Gnawers had enough sheep and goats near their mountain hideout to supply them.

They did not need to go pillaging and eating poor souls in the valleys.

He stopped the assault on the man and stepped back. The pinky was totally out of it and only barely alive.

That made him ... sad?

[I]Slowly calming down, Merry decided to give it a shot.

He ascended after all.

She couldn't do a thing against it anyway.

Aaaalthough, this would be a LOT of work to mold ... this ... Brute into an ACTUAL paladin.

Using her new connection to ... Gork - really? what name is Gork by the stinky socks of Turag?! - he said:[\i]

"What you feel, is regret and you pity him.

Because you were responsible for this.

And unrightfully so.

Because you did him wrong.

I am the Golden Maid, protector of the innocent and you will serve me and undo and repent what evil you did before."

And this is the beginning of the story of the first and only Ogre Paladin known to this realm.

All about Merry the Golden Maid:

This represents everything Merry the Golden Maid has revealed to you about her own nature.

Above all else, Merry is a guardian and helper to the simple people. Those who till the fields, tend the herds. Those who live in their villages amongst the people they've always known, and have no ambition to do any more than enjoy their life, raise their children, and watch the cycle repeat.

Merry is most present in villages and rural areas. Low population, low industry. While she does work among the poor people of the cities, there are other gods that usually outwork her for their adoration.

Merry does not shy from violence. The drunken brawl can be fun, the border fight can be necessary - hell, the destruction of true evil can be joyful. But Merry recognizes that 'true evil' is rare. Most people just want to get by. Thus, Merry prefers her worshipers value life and take it only at great need. Merry understands that sometimes killing is necessary - but she teaches that where the strong and capable folk might need to kill to establish peace, the very strong and capable folk establish peace by only knocking a few folk about.

Basically this means that Gork should shy away from killing people unless he is convinced their deaths will protect more people.

Merry values hard work. People should not sit idle, even the those who are needy. People do not deserve kindness just for existing, but if they are willing to do something, anything to earn their way, then those with the means should provide. (There is an exception for recognized holidays - Merry loves a good festival! Nobody should have to labor on a holiday when they should be getting drunk and enjoying life).

When it comes to the needy, Merry does not necessarily look down on beggars/panhandlers/etc, but she much prefers people who are willing to do some kind of work. Those who are severely disabled should still be willing to try and work when a task can be found that suits their abilities. In this sense, Merry holds a special love for the elderly - advising and sharing wisdom, giving council etc is very much a task worthy of compensation and honor.

As far as relations between peoples goes, Merry is adamant that all thinking people should be accepted as equal. Neither the place or wealth of one's birth really makes a difference. People are people. If you're willing to get along, you should be gotten along with.

There is no room in Merry's theology for speciesism, racism, classism, or any other kind of bigotry. She protects and loves all good, kind, simple people. This has probably been one of the biggest hurdles for Gork and his people - learning to treat non-ogres the same as ogres, and other ogres the same as others of their own tribe.

Okay, so trying to devise even the basics of an ethics system directly handed down by a god is hard. I think this gives you the right idea. If you think there is a major topic that Gork would have run into already that isn't either covered or could be inferred by what I've written above, go ahead and ask.

Get a mount already!:

*** One fateful day not too soon after Gorks ascencion ***

"Gork, you need a mighty steed."

"Wot?"

"A steed. Uff, ahm... A mount?"

"Wot?"

"Argh, for the sake of … Wheew. A loyal and mighty animal on which you can ride into battle – visible from afar for your followers and enemies alike. A symbol of faith. That's what Paladins do."

"Uhh-Huh. Ogres don' ride. Nothin' 'round can carry us."

"Oh, thats … actually right. Ehem …

We will find one that can carry you. What is the strongest animal you know?"

"Hmmm... Ehhhm.... Öööhh.... Guess dragons' strong?"

"…....

That is living nearby and is walking on four legs."

"Hrmmmhh, da big ox? Big as a hummie and heavy as us. Gud nommy."

"A cattle? Hmm, maybe. Find the biggest one around."

"Gud idea, Gorks hungy!"

"Not to eat! I told you, you need a mount to be a Paladin."

"Must I ..."

"Yes."

"Mhhkay...."

*** Many (long) days later ***

"Marry look, ters a big un."

"Ahh, yes, a mighty aurochs. And he is white, like no other in the herd – that is a sign. Catch him. But.Do.Not.Kill.Him."

"Mhhkay..."

*** After a very long fight, both giants lie at the ground, too exhausted for another round ***

"Name him."

"Wut? Wy? I want to eat him! Fightin makes Gork hungry..."

"You shall not eat this proud and mighty animal. Name him and I will forge a bind between you, making it your closest and most loyal ally you can imagine … actually, even better than what you can image."

"Mhhkay. Wot name?"

"You must find his name in your soul. Just look at him and name him. Use the first word that comes to your mind..."

"Ham."

"Argh!"

And that's how Gork met his trusty bonded mount … Ham, the mighty white aurochs.

Appearance:

Before you stands an Ogre.

A real Ogre, full grown to at least three meter and clad in multiple layers of metal armour of surprising good quality tipped with fur.

The round head with the big maw is looking at you through big brown eyes and with a slow-witted expression of curiousity but a noticeable lack of the tell-tale cruelty Ogres are feared for.

Over his back, a massive axe is strapped, the size of a grown man with sheafs of grain wrapped around its shaft for a reason you can only guess.

Upon closer inspection you notice that the breastplate of his half-plate features a unique symbol, crudely carved into the iron and slightly darkened. With some imigaination it may represent an eight with a thicker-than-normal mid-section made from some braided fabric that is unrecognisable.

It seems likely that it should represent the religious (?) token he is wearing around the neck on a long leather band. It has the form of an eight made of braided and looped hay held together by a silver bracelet.
