The F*@#ing Owlbear (aka The Effing Owlbear, aka Effy!) Background:
The man known as Shirley, has not had a typical upbringing.
It started out normal enough... a child living on a poor farm with his family, barely eking out a living in rural Varisia... but that all changed when a group of local goblins, known as the Stone Spitters, suddenly got a thirst to move up in the world. The Stone Spitters occasionally did jobs for a nearby hobgoblin tribe, typically tasked with grunt work or other unpleasant tasks the hobgoblins did not want to do themselves. This particular hobgoblin tribe was ambitious, looking to join with demonic forces to increase their own power and prestige. As such, they needed a number of young children to sacrifice, and tasked the Stone Spitters to go out and capture a few. Snagging a few human children seemed an easy enough task... but being goblins, they got in their own way more often than not, and by the time they raided the little boy named Shirley's farm, killing off his family, and dragging him back to their village, a fair bit of time had passed since they were given the task in the first place. They threw him in a pen, usually reserved for not yet dead meals, or the occasional grudge match. Then they waited... for the hobgoblins to come claim their prize, and reward them! Of course, unbeknown to the goblins, during the time they took to capture even one child... those same hobgoblins had run afoul of a group of adventurers seeking to stop the rise of the demonic forces the hobgoblins were trying to ally with. By the time Shirley was thrown in the pen, there were no longer anyone to come fetch him for sacrifice. So in the pen he sat... for days, then weeks, then months... until even the goblins forgot why they'd brought him there. Still, they knew it was for something important... so they continued to feed him scraps, and torment him whenever they were bored... but never quite getting to the point of killing him off for food. And so it was, that Shirley grew up among goblins. Never quite welcome, never quite wanted... but something familiar they never got around to disposing of. As a child, he was the size of the goblins, and easily tormented. He learned to become tough at a very young age. As he got older, he quickly outgrew his captors, but it did not seem to stop their tormenting... and they began to call him Hidesbad, due to his inability to hide as deftly as the much smaller goblins. He did not remember his brief time among humans anymore... and soon longed to fit in among this family: the goblins, if only to get harassed less. He let his hair grow long, covering it in mud and other substances to make it stand out, so his head looked bigger. He learned to stoop over as he moved, in hopes of appearing shorter. Eventually, he even filed his teeth down to points, so as to better fit in. What he knew of the world, he knew from a goblin perspective. Horses and dogs were very bad. Words were worse. Longshanks were normal bad. Goblins were awesome! But there was no denying he was stronger, and larger than even the mightiest of the Stone Spitters... a fact that bothered many of them a great deal. Hidesbad was not nearly as much fun to torment, anymore. So when the goblins one day returned with a pair of eggs from a nearby abandoned farm, they were quite excited. The farm had been overrun by a mighty owlbear, and their stealthiest hero had managed to sneak in and steal a couple of its eggs. The goblins figured if they could raise some owlbears of their own... they'd not only have something to make their tribe even more powerful, but also something that might finally knock that annoying Hidesbad down a peg or two... or at the very least a leg or two. But before those eggs could hatch, a group of Pathfinder agents, investigating the owlbear attack on the farm, tracked the Stone Spitters back to their village, and quite quickly wiped them out... they were surprised to find a nearly feral adult human among the goblins. One that could barely utter half a dozen words in common, but spoke goblin like a native. And so it was that Shirley Hidesbad ended up in the Pathfinder Lodge in Magnimar, slowly learning that he was not in fact an overly large, and very ugly goblin, but instead one of the longshanks he was supposed to despise. He took one of the owlbear eggs with him, when he was 'rescued'... and the agents in Magnimar were happy for him to have a distraction while they tried to figure out how to acclimate him to their own world. Today, Shirley still feels a kinship with goblins... many of the traits they beat into him not so easy to dislodge... but also realizes his true roots as well, even if he has a tendency to ignore them. It was with some trepidation that the VC's eventually let him join in on Society missions. He still adamantly refused to read anything (though he didn't try to destroy such readings immediately upon being presented anymore) nor had he any idea how to write a sentence, much less a report. He still used weapons of goblin design, though ones customized to be much larger than typical... but they could not deny his martial skills, nor his unusual affinity to the owlbear he had managed to rear from that egg (Though it was still not the least bit friendly, even to Shirley).
