Background:

The night was dark. Distant streetlamps are not bright enough to illuminate the interior of the small building. ‘Petro’s Provisions’ is a quiet general store by day, but one night every month it serves a more sinister purpose - gathering ground and a temple for the faithful of Father Skinsaw. But this is not the night, and it’s very quiet except for one lone figure.

The nameless one enters the back room - the sacred room. In his hands he carries bottles of flammable oil. These very same hands, which carried murderous prayers to Norgober, now pour oil all over the temple. These hands will burn and destroy all that once was holy to him. He knows he cannot end the cult, not alone. But perhaps by destroying the meeting place he would disperse them, for years to come. For when no one knows who the others are, how could the arrange a new meeting if the old place is destroyed.

And why he is doing this? He doesn’t quite know. Not too long ago, he was not only faithful, but clergy. Praying and preaching, and stalking the streets for victims - for the greatest praise for Father Skinsaw was no song or prayer, but murder. He was good at what he did, and he was glad where he was. But something changed. Was he touched by the divine? A pang of conscience? Whatever the case, he was horrified of what he had done, and disgusted by what he had become. He had to get out, and he had to do something about the cult.

Now the oil was everywhere, the floor, the furniture. But most of all, he has to make sure the scriptures will not survive. Two steps, and he is next to the bookcase. There, one very unremarkable-looking book among other equally unremarkable books collects seven texts of The Words Behind the Mask. Without these texts, without faith, the cult will be little more than common murderers. The man opens the book, and starts tearing the pages. But at that very moment he feels something - a feeling of darkness and unbearable malice. And the book in his hands combusts, and flames catch on his hands. Searing pain. The man cannot help but scream. The oil catches fire, and everything is flames. Screaming, he tries to find his way out, and…

…and he wakes up, screaming as he did in the dream. Same dream, every night. One would think one could get used to it. But no, the dream is so vivid every time. He looks around, swipes away the incense and the symbols of Desna - useless trinkets. On the nightstand is a bottle rum - Cailean’s medicine at least keeps his days sane. As he reaches for the bottle, he sees his hand - all burned and blackened. A gift from Norgober, no doubt.

Then a knock, and a voice calling. ”Reverend Blake, are you awake? There are people who wish to see you.” It takes a while to connect. Yes, that’s his name now. Reverend Sherman Blake. Has been for a year now. A humble priest, helping people. ”Yeah, yeah, coming…” he says, and grimaces in pain as he slowly gets up from the bed.
