Background Questions:

1. What is your character’s name?
Shalyna Alathreil. She left her old family name behind when she left Menzoberranzan. (And boy, howdy did she leave a mess.)

2. How old is your character?
Shalyna just turned thirty-four about a month ago.

3. What would somebody see at first glance (i.e. height, weight, skin color, eye color, hair color, physique, race, and visible equipment)?
Shalyna's about average height for a drow with an hourglass figure. Her white hair is kept long and often braided. Her skin is a dark, ashen gray. She has pale-blue eyes, and her eyes glow pale-blue when using darkvision. Most of her clothing and gear are in shades of black, purple, and red, but that's because everything the drow makes are those colors, and she hasn't had a chance to change them to colors she likes.

4. What additional attributes would be noticed upon meeting the character (i.e. Speech, mannerisms)?
She's always playing with something if she's standing or sitting still.

5. Where was your character born? Where were you raised? By who?
Menzoberranzan, the City of Spiders, is where she was born and raised. Technically she was raised by her mother and sisters, but she was mostly ignored before she ran away from home.

6. Who are your parents? Are they alive? What do they do for a living?
Kelina Hortheaux, her mother and the Matron of House Hortheaux, and Diantag, her father and Patron of House Hortheaux. They're drow nobles, so professional backstabbers.

7. Do you have any other family or friends?
Shalyna has several older siblings. She was the youngest of the bunch.

8. What is your character’s marital status? Kids?
Single. No Kids.

9. What is your character’s alignment?
Chaotic Neutral. She cares mostly about her own skin and amusement, though she's not the kind of person to leave those that help her out in the lurch.

10. What is your character’s moral code?
Doesn't really have one, beyond not aggravating those that help you out.

11. Does your character have goals?
Yes! She wants to reach the surface and see everything she can!

12. Is your character religious?
Nope, not a bit.

13. What are your character’s personal beliefs?
Lolth and the drow are all waaaaaay too stuffy and pretentious for their own good.

14. Does your character have any personality quirks (i.e. anti-social, arrogant, optimistic, paranoid)?
She's a prankster. She loves hearing stories, and she laughs easily.

15. Why does your character adventure? Why did your character accept the job?
Shalyna is looking to find more than what life as a noble and priestess in Menzoberranzan offers. She's not after power, but stories and experiences.

16. How does your character view his/her role as an adventurer?
She doesn't really have any views on that. Most of her time since leaving Menzoberranzan has been focused on just surviving.

17. Does your character have any distinguishing marks (birth-marks, scars, deformities)?
Nope.

18. How does your character get along with others?
Pretty well. She respects most people's boundaries.

19. Is there anything that your character hates?
Boredom.
Lolth.
Priestesses of Lolth.
Spiders.

20. Is there anything that your character fears?
Other than the normal stuff? Not particularly.

Background:

Shalyna was born the youngest daughter of a minor house whose only abundant resource was its daughters. Her elder sisters seeing her as a rival for their positions mostly ignored her when they weren't giving her the tasks they loathed. So it was that the youngest daughter of House Hortheaux was largely left to her own devices outside of her duties to the family after being weaned.

Since she was old enough to be entrusted with any responsibilities, she was given the task of overseeing the slaves of House Hortheaux. She quickly learned the languages of the goblins, orcs, and gnolls that served the house and soon grew curious about the world outside of Menzoberranzan from the bits and pieces she learned from those that had been captured in raids on the surface or on the tribes in the Underdark. That curiosity was only fanned to greater intensity when she was put in charge of keeping an elf captured in a raid alive.

The elf, Olindon Alathreil, was cold at first, but as he realized that the young drow put in charge of him lacked the malice he saw in her kin, he began to answer her questions and impart what he knew to her, teaching her Sylvan and Common as well as telling her how to use a bow. Shalyna grew to like Olindon, and saw the elf as a friend, even though he was a captive.

Sadly, it was not to last. Her mother sacrificed Olindon in a long, excruciating ritual that gave House Hortheaux victory over a rival. Shalyna was made to watch, and while she was horrified by both what happened to Olindon and her family's frenzied bloodlust, she never let any of what she felt show on her face. She put on a mask that she would wear for the rest of her time living in Menzoberranzan. Outwardly appearing to be as any other drow reveling in the chaos and bloodshed while her innermost self wept for what had happened.

Over the years, Shalyna would sneak about and read forbidden tomes and scrolls on the outside world. All the while, her grief over the loss of her only friend, Olindon, gave way to an intense hatred of the ways of her people and particularly the ways in which Lolth demanded they behave. Trapped and stifled in Menzoberranzan, she decided that her best course of action was to leave. So she plotted and planned for the day she got the opportunity.

That would come the night she turned thirty-four years old. Her family left for a party at another house, and Shalyna was left behind. With years of planning and preparation and hours to execute her machinations, Shalyna got to work as soon as her family left the house. She vandalized the chapel and the holy robes of the priestesses. She opened the doors to the treasury and armory. She did everything she could to exact whatever petty vengeance she could against her family, from leaving the gates open to recoloring her family's wardrobes in every garish color she could imagine to putting itching powder in her sisters' underwear.

Her work done, she left Menzoberranzan as Narbondel begin to glow, marking the dawn of a new day. By the time her family came home to discover what had happened, she was long gone into the Underdark. Her last words to her family were scrawled in bright paint over the altar to Lolth.

Shalyna Hortheaux is dead, if she ever truly lived. Shalyna Alathreil lives, and may you all be damned with Lolth.

The next month proved to be hellish for Shalyna. Only luck kept her alive as she traveled through the Underdark, fleeing Menzoberranzan and her family's wrath. She slept little, and her paranoia grew as fatigue wore at her. She wanted to reach the surface, but had no way of knowing the way she needed to go. So, she picked a path that she hoped would lead up out of the Underdark. Soon, she was down to only a couple of weeks of water and food, despite her attempts at rationing and foraging. Two weeks seemed too little time to find her way out of the Underdark, and she began to despair. Still, she pressed on, determined to either make it out of the Underdark or die in the attempt. That is when she found Brazenthrone. While she could tell there was plenty of danger in the old dwarven city, she also knew that she could probably find a safe place to sleep, and perhaps even a way up to the surface.

Carefully, she slipped into the city and found a place away from the dangers and horrors of the dead city. Fatigue took her and she slipped off into the first restful sleep she had enjoyed since fleeing her birthplace. She slept, curled up in her blankets, unaware of what was going on elsewhere in the city.
