Shalia, when pressed on what exactly she does in life, usually responds some vague idea about a calling to go and explore the world and meet all kinds of interesting people. After all, it'd be tragic to deny the people of the Inner Sea the company of one so refined as her, especially those unlucky enough to be from the poorer, less well off amongst society.
Of course, what she doesn't tend to mention is the various threats of imprisonment and worse in the places she previously graced with her presence, thanks to the string of disappearing items that tend to follow her around. Or that her effort of appearing refined is entirely fake, inspired by her mothers frankly bizarre claim of having been in the service of one of the noble houses of Brevoy, only to be fired and shooed away back to native Varisia when she became pregnant. But, she found it far easier to go on her grand tour of the Inner Sea if she at least appeared refined and elegant, and after years of careful training, she's got enough of it down to impress some of the more drunk locals.
Now, perhaps inspired by her mothers tale, or simply having run out of places to go without the threat of a prison cell looming over her, Shalia finds herself in Northern Brevoy, ready for another grand adventure.
