About "Sev"

Appearance

:
Easily identified as a tiefling, Sev has a dusky grey, almost scaly complexion. In contrast to his dark skin, eyes of a brilliant emerald hue shine with a perpetual, defiant glow. His head is crowned by two large, twisting, goat-like horns which he often covers with a hood to avoid unwanted attention -- though it is rarely effective. Each of his thin, spindly fingers is tipped in a black, razor-sharp claw. His scaled black tail is often wrapped around his waist like a belt, and often becomes an emotive component of his body language, especially when his emotions run high.

Sev is tall, muscular, and lithe. He might be considered attractive if tieflings had any real standard of beauty, but his aloof nature makes him difficult to get close to, and he is often perceived as emotionally detached.

Background

:
"Seven", whose truename is unknown even to himself, was born in Korvosa's temple of Asmodeus to a priestess of Asmodeus by the name of Shalaer'ai. Though she kept the specifics of her lineage a secret, her fiend-blooded children did nothing to quell the many rumors and speculation about her infernal bloodline.

The formative years of his life were spent in the great star-shaped temple under the "guidance" of his mother and older siblings. Shalaer'ai was a strict disciplinarian, and hardly a loving or maternal figure. She was also known to be a fickle lover, and has taken many sires. Her bastard children number twelve at present, and all of them are referred to by the order of their birth. Their truenames are withheld from them, for there is power in names, and with that power comes leverage and control.

The Seventh Spawn of Shalaer'ai was a difficult child. His siblings were all apt pupils and took to Asmodeus' dogma with ease. The children were raised in a disciplined monastic tradition, and were taught to be scholars of law and martial prowess. However, the seventh was curious about life outside of the temple and its plethora of rules and strict contracts. He took to wandering outside of the temple without permission, and often engaged in confrontations with his many siblings. It was during one of his many meandering walks through Korvosa's streets that he was lured by a man named Lamm into a tantalizing offer of independence. Being the black sheep that he was, he took the chance to make his own way.. not knowing that it would always be Lamm's way.

His mother never truly looked for him, and most of his siblings cared very little for his presence in the first place. For the next ten years, Lamm and his "children" would be the only family he'd have.

One of Lamm's Lambs, Raina Thornton, was a few years younger than him when they were both working for Lamm. They were close, and spent much of their time together during those early years. They looked out for each other. When Lamm grew tired of Raina, Seven stood by and watched as she was beaten, too afraid to speak up or to help. He kept in touch with her through sporadic encounters in the years that followed, but their relationship was never the same.

"Sev", as he came to be known, showed a talent for subtlety and quick-thinking, which led to his employ as a pickpocket and burglar under Lamm. He was barely given scraps when he succeeded, and beaten viciously when he failed. He often secreted away some of the money he "earned" into a small stash, hoping that he would eventually have enough to make it on his own. When Lamm inevitably found out that the tiefling had been holding out on him, he was beaten within an inch of his life and cast out onto the streets with nothing.

He wandered for a few years, scraping a living the only way he knew how. He stole out of necessity, and kept few long-term contacts in the city. Sometimes he would skulk around the temple of Asmodeus to catch a glimpse of his mother, but his resentment of her and his siblings kept him from returning. He could never go back.

Lamm's face still haunts the tiefling's dreams, even now. His guilt hounds him, and he can't help but linger around the district where his former childhood friend, Raina, resides. He sees her often in passing, but the words they exchange never seem to be enough. He can never quite bring himself to truly apologize, and the rift between them never seems to heal, no matter how much he might like it to. He knew that he would have to make things right, that he would have to make up for his past weakness. Lamm needed to pay, and then... maybe he could repair what he'd broken so long ago..

People and Places

:
Shalaer'ai: Sev's estranged mother. They have not been in contact for many years.

Nirala Vilani: A beautiful, but troubled half-elf. Former lover and initiate of Pharasma. Their relationship is tumultuous at best, fiery and confrontational at worst. Nirala is short-tempered and passionate, and find's Sev's emotional unavailability frustrating.

Temple of Asmodeus: Spent most of his early childhood living, studying, and socializing here. Doesn't remember it fondly.

Gray: A quiet place to think. When he's not chasing the ghosts of his past or the coinpurse of his latest mark, he can often be found in the less secure wards of the necropolis (mostly Potter's Ward and Everyman Ward). He had an on-again, off-again relationship with an initiate priestess of Pharasma before they finally called it quits about a year ago.

Citadel Volshyenek: Spent a year incarcerated here for burglary. Still maintains contact with a few former (and current) inmates.

A typical day: Sev wakes late and spends most of his time prowling the streets in search of easy marks or goods to snatch from merchant stalls. He spends a lot of time in the Pillar Hill area with intermittent trips to the Gray ward.
