Appearance / Backstory Seravin grew up in the courts, the favored son of a widely-recognized mistress, he held a precarious sort of station, above the servants and staff, but required to play the serving-boy in the presence of the legitimate children of his noble father, even if *everybody* knew his parentage and his mother’s place in the court.
For some time, there was animosity between himself and his fathers’ younger (and legitimate) son, Andrei, but as time passed, the young heir learned that the true dangers to his ever taking the throne were those who stood to advance if he fell into disfavor. A bastard son would never profit by his downfall, and Seravin carefully cultivated that understanding into his younger half-brother, so that he could guide him when the time came, and be the power behind the throne. Soon they studied together, learning of history and statecraft, and together practiced the ancient techniques of the Aldori swordlords before the same humorless wizened instructor who had taught their father before them, dueling with live steel, their trust in each other was so strong. Their father provided arcane tutelage as well, and while Andrei showed little talent for such things, they came naturally to Seravin, and the lessons continued, a quiet gift from a man who would never call him son. Soon, Seravin demonstrated for Andrei a special knack for convincing rivals to set aside their disagreements, or even to bespell quail to fall into slumber, so that the boys could walk right up and seize them to place in their bag, their hunt a success without an arrow fired.
Steering the young man through the various pitfalls set before him by rival families and his own younger siblings, Seravin failed to notice that he was becoming known himself, as the boys not-so-secret protector, the ‘no-account bastard’ who nevertheless seemed to warn the young heir away from traps, both physical and social.
And so, when the young fool fell from his horse on an ill-omened boar-hunt during treacherous weather, Seravin was left with a household full of up-and-coming ‘next-in-line’ heirs who loved him not at all, for foiling their own advances for so long…
All his cunning had turned around upon him, and he realized that his relatively pleasant life of ease was at an end, as the new heir apparent, a younger half-sister, began to find odious tasks for him, which, as a ‘servant’ at the estate, he was compelled to perform without complaint. While his father had been pleased that he had helped steer the young heir through the treacherous waters of courtly life, with the death of that son, and the ascension of his daughter to the head of the line, he felt bound to honor her wishes, as he had those of her late brother. Unwilling to remain in this increasingly intolerable situation, Seravin has taken what he could find about the manor house to make his own way in the world, including some of his late brothers clothing (with his fathers’ implicit consent), and walked away from the only home he has known, to find new opportunities, and, perhaps this time, not to put all of his eggs in one basket…
Things Seravin does not know;
His half-sister, Mirina, who tormented him so, did not do so out of a desire to punish him for his loyalty to her older brother (well, maybe a little...), but because she was incensed that he had spurned her in the past, having mistaken her genuine attraction for an attempt to wheedle her way into his confidence, and manipulate her older brother's 'secret helper.' Seravin spent years learning to influence the actions of his brother, but remains to this day somewhat clueless regarding how to interact with women...
