Backstory:
Sebastien stared at the letter in shock. Professor Lorrimor, the closest thing he had to a father, was dead. That they weren't actually related never entered his thoughts and would have brought no consolation even if it had. His actual father had died attempting to defend his mother from the undead fiend responsible for Sebastien's cursed heritage. The Professor had regaled him, and any who would listen, with the tale of how the Moroi had bit his pregnant mother on a whim out of some fleeting desire for an undead family. It was the Professor who had spirited her away and delivered her to the Pharasmins on the night of his birth, and his arguments that had convinced the priests to spare the child. His mother died bringing him into this world and the sight of him emerging from her womb screaming and recoiling from the light coupled with the Professor's impassioned arguments led the Bishop to relent. The Bishop, whom he referred to as Auntie Ulmetria, had told him the same story many times as well, however, in her telling, she relented not because the Professor had convinced her with his pleas but simply to shut him up. "Aw jeez, fine!" she had bellowed in surrender, and while she may not have been the typical doting mother she had always loved him in her own way. In fact, Sebastien had a very happy, though painful, childhood. Auntie Ulmetria held to the beliefs of the Pharasmin Penitence and had insisted that he embrace the light of day despite the pain it caused him. "Never forget child. Our suffering in life shall reap rewards once we reach our mistress' embrace and your rewards shall be great indeed!"

Growing up in Cryptgate Cathedral Sebastien learned much from his Auntie, the priests, and from the Professor who would visit periodically to check in on him. Auntie Ulmetria insisted that his studies take place in the gardens in the open air and the sunlight. "I won't have you skulking about in some crypt like the cursed beast that bit your mum!" she would say. Of course, the archivists were none too fond of Sebastien taking the books outside. Archivist Wright was vehemently against it in fact though he was wise enough not to voice those concerns to Auntie Ulmetria more than once. After that Sebastien's daily trips to the Archive were supervised by one of Wright's assistants whom Sebastien affectionately refers to as Millie. In addition to standard Pharasmin doctrine, Sebastien's studies focused heavily on various undead and how best to dispatch them. Auntie Ulmetria sternly lectured that they were abominations, perversions of Pharasma's plan and that they should be hunted down and eliminated to the very last ghoul...by Sebastien. Sebastien ever the dutiful student and "nephew" Sebastien happily learned all that he could from his Auntie and the archives and on his fifteenth birthday, he accompanied the Professor and a Pharasmin Inquisitor on a mission. The Professor wanted a vampiric specimen he could study and the Inquisitor reluctantly agreed to help him subdue the creature if the Professor agreed to help eradicate all of its spawn. Sebastien was provided a crossbow, holy water, and several cloves of garlic and was told it was time to put his studies to good use. Sebastien could not contain his excitement, not just at the prospect of spending time with the Professor, but at the prospect of dispatching the vampire's undead servants. Auntie Ulmetria watched proudly as they left the Kavapesta overjoyed at her ward's apparent zeal. Sebastien, however, felt no hate or revulsion. Sebastien, however, felt no hatred or revulsion when he thought of the undead only sadness. He saw them as damned, wretched beasts cursed to never know Pharasma's embrace and he would be Pharasma's instrument joyfully releasing them from their torment. The trip took about a week and the Inquisitor, following Ulmatria's instructions, insisted they travel in the open during the day. It was during this trip that the Professor concocted a tonic to relieve some of Sebastien's discomfort during the day. The trip went mostly according to plan. They struck during the day when the vampire and his spawn would be weakest and the Inquisitor went about his grim business while the Professor immobilized his quarry with arcane runes. As he was finishing the ritual, however, one of the vampire's spawn who had managed to avoid the Inquisitor's notice leaped from the shadows and struck at the Professor. Sebastien spotted the beast just in time and impaled it with bolt after bolt from his crossbow. "Don't worry" he said, "your suffering is at an end." The Professor took his specimen back to Lepidstadt for study and Sebastien accompanied the Inquisitor home to Cryptgate where he was celebrated by his Auntie and the other priests for his slaying the beast and saving the Professor.

"I can't believe he's gone," Sebastien thought as he put aside the letter and roused himself from his memories. "I was so proud to have saved him. To think it only bought him two more years."
