Background:
Scholar was born in the wilds of Numeria to two human parents. She was cursed with the oracle's deafness from birth. Her parents both died when she was 4, and she was left to herself in the wild. She would have certainly died at that point, except that the gods saw her potential and manifested her oracle powers in response to her dire need. Her magic kept her safe from the elements and predators, healed her when she was hurt, and made dirty food and water safe to eat and drink. While she grew quite adept at living in the wild, she had a deep curiosity and a hunger to learn driven partially by natural curiosity and partially by the divinely inspired visions she receives from her mystery. As she grew into her early teen years, she ventured back into civilization, drawn by the lure of exploring the unknown and the knowledge she could acquire there. While the initial transition to being surrounded by people was a shock, with hard work, determination, a prodigious intellect and the blessings of the gods, she was able to learn both to read lips and a number of languages. Armed with a burning desire to learn everything about the world, she spent the next 15 years of her life traveling far and wide, reading everything she could get her hands on, learning from many different cultures, institutes of learning and libraries. As part of this process, she has acquired both a great deal of book learning and a large amount of practical knowledge in applying her knowledge to creating things. Most recently, she has spent a year at the University of Lepidstadt in Ustalav, where she began studying advanced mathematics and ancient history. During these studies, she became intrigued with the legends and mysteries of the land of her birth, and was able to find sufficient references to the technological ruins located there to learn the language Androffan. Having finished her studies in Lepidstadt, she now travels to Numeria, where she intends to seek out ancient mysteries and uncover the secrets of her home while earning sufficient funds to continue seeking her education around the world.
Philosophy and Mind:
Scholar views everything in the world as connected. Nature, Artifice, Magic, Technology -- these are all components of a greater whole, bound together by rules and knowledge. Intimate understanding of these rules gives the practitioner the power to create or change the things that follow them. Scholar knows deep in her heart, guided by the visions she receives, that it is her destiny to try and learn all there is to know, and by extension how to create all there is to create. Towards this end, she travels the world, learning everything she can from every source she can. As she was deaf and very young, she was only partially aware of the concept of words when her parents died. Left to her own devices, she didn't develop a spoken language. As such, she doesn't think in words like most intelligent creatures. She thinks in images, emotions and colors. This led to great difficulty in her initial acclimation to interaction with other humans, as she did not think in the correct ways to understand the way they communicated. It was only with the blessings bestowed by her mystery that she was able to piece together the connections between lip movements and the more concrete thoughts she used. Once the initial conceptual leaps were accomplished, she quickly learned a wide variety of languages and mastered lip reading. Learning to talk took significantly longer. She did not learn to speak as a child, and her deafness made it very difficult to learn how to form the correct sounds to replicate the mouth movements she had replicated. Further adding to her difficulties, her thoughts did not always translate well to words. For some time, she preferred to interact with others through drawings or charades, only resorting to written words when those failed. These methods of communication were greatly enhanced a few years into her journey when Scholar was gifted a Cloak of the Hedge Wizard by a lover while studying spellcraft in Quantium. This enabled her to use prestidigitation to create crude drawings or dioramas to help communicate. Although she has since worked very hard at learning to speak and has grown used to using speech as her main form of communication, she still views the cloak as her most prized possession. Since Scholar thinks in images, she does not find the concept of names natural. To her, a things’ name is just the essence of what it is, the mental image that encompasses everything known about it. As such, she has never taken one. While studying at a university long ago, her fellow students started referring to her as ‘The Scholar’ due to her purpose and her amazing academic abilities. It was eventually shortened to Scholar, and she has chosen to give it as her name when necessary, as it accurately reflects at least a portion of how she views her true name in her mind.
Personality & Physical Description:
Scholar is an attractive woman in her late 20’s. She is 5’7”, with green eyes and medium length black hair she keeps pulled back in a pony tail. She is fit and lightly muscled from her lengthy travels. While traveling, she is usually wearing a wide brimmed hat and a tough, practical wardrobe complete with knee high leather boots under the breastplate she forged while learning to smith in Varisia. She wraps herself in her favorite possession, a dark green Cloak of the Hedge Wizard, and carries a Handy Haversack on her back that contains all of her possessions. At her hip, she carries a cold iron mace she forged herself as part of the same experience. Scholar is a very friendly woman. She has traveled the length and breadth of this continent and met many interesting people in her life, and she tries to keep an open mind about everyone she meets. She is still somewhat quiet and uses body language more than the average person, but has long since mastered speaking well enough to carry on conversations with people she meets, and has made a conscious effort to express herself more frequently using words. She is still somewhat self conscious about her deafness, however, and can get unsettled if a social situation does not go well as a result. Scholar loves the joy of discovery, of creation, and learning. She is happiest when reading or creating something. Painting is her favorite act of creation, as it allows her to truly express what she sees in her mind. She carries many blank canvasses, and will occasionally paint landscapes, portraits or other subjects for relaxation. She keeps a number of paintings that she particularly enjoys or that represent major achievements in her life, but sells most of them to help provide funds for travel. In addition, she keeps a journal of her travels, all in pictures, detailing 15 years of journeys across Golarion.
